Stockholm's Old Town with boat on water in foreground flying Swedish flag\u003cbr/\u003eGerhard Ertl of Germany won the 2007 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for studies of chemical reactions on solid surfaces, which are key to understanding such questions as why the ozone layer is thinning.\u003cbr/\u003eErtl's research laid the foundation of modern surface chemistry, which has helped explain how fuel cells produce energy without pollution, how catalytic converters clean up car exhaust and even why iron rusts, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.\u003cbr/\u003eErtl, who was celebrating his 71st birthday on Wednesday in Berlin, told reporters at first he was speechless and tears sprang to his eyes.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe also added that it was the best birthday present anyone could be given.\u003cbr/\u003eThe award citation stated that Gerhard Ertl had succeeded in providing a detailed description of how chemical reactions take place on surfaces and had in this way laid the foundation of modern surface chemistry.\u003cbr/\u003eErtl - the first German to win the chemistry prize since 1988 - showed how reliable results could be obtained in a difficult area of research, and his findings applied in both academic studies and industrial development, the academy said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe academy highlighted Ertl's studies of a chemical process in which nitrogen is extracted from the air, using iron as a catalyst, for inclusion in artificial fertilisers. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the academy, that process has had enormous economic significance.\u003cbr/\u003eErtl has also studied the oxidation for carbon monoxide on platinum, a reaction that helps clean exhaust emissions in the catalytic converters of cars. \u003cbr/\u003eAutomakers worldwide have in recent years been trying to produce cars that are more fuel-efficient and less harmful to the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eOther scientists have been able to build on his research and methodology to further the understanding of surface chemistry, which is a key field of research for the chemical industry.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Surface chemistry can even explain the destruction of the ozone layer as vital steps in the reaction actually take place on the surfaces of small crystals of ice in the stratosphere,\" the award citation said.\u003cbr/\u003eAstrid Graslund, the secretary of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said Ertl's work had paved the way for development of cleaner energy sources and will guide the development of fuel cells.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a Nobel prize that deals with very basic fundamental chemistry and our understanding of chemical reactions on solid surfaces but on the other hand you could say that chemical reactions on solid surfaces are a very important part of our everyday life,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eFuel cells produce electricity from hydrogen and oxygen with only water and heat as byproducts.\u003cbr/\u003eErtl is a professor emeritus at the Max Planck Institute, one of Germany's most prominent research centres. \u003cbr/\u003eJohann Deisenhofer, Robert Huber and Hartmut Michel were the last German scientists to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry when they shared the award in 1988.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chemistry award was the third of this year's Nobel Prizes to be announced.\u003cbr/\u003eAmericans Mario R. Capecchi and Oliver Smithies, and Briton Sir Martin J. Evans, won the 2007 Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for ground breaking discoveries that led to a powerful technique for manipulating mouse genes.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, France's Albert Fert and German Peter Gruenberg won the physics award for discovering a phenomenon that lets computers and digital music players store reams of data on ever-shrinking hard disks.\u003cbr/\u003ePrizes for literature, peace and economics will be announced through October 15.\u003cbr/\u003eThe awards - each worth 10 (m) million Swedish kronor (1.5 (m) million US dollars) - will be handed out by Sweden's
