However you would then have issues as far as the amount of people that are being cremated, and the greenhouse gas issues. Various hearse with horses leaving cemetery\u003cbr/\u003eThink London is crowded with the living?\u003cbr/\u003eThen consider the armies of the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain's capital is rapidly running out of places to put its deceased residents, and sharing a grave might be the only solution.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are almost 8 million people in London, and many millions more under the soil of a city that has been inhabited for 2,000 years. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd London is rapidly running out of places to put the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eGary Burks, superintendent and registrar City of London cemetery, agrees there is a space issue. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a space issue in that we can't reuse the graves that are already here. We have a 200 acre (80 hectares) site that's best part of full up with burials.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe problem is a very British one. \u003cbr/\u003eMany other European countries regularly reuse old graves after a couple of decades. \u003cbr/\u003eBritain does not, as a result of Victorian hygiene obsession, piecemeal regulation and national tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many, an Englishman's tomb, like his home, is his castle.\u003cbr/\u003eThat view is common, too, in the United States, which like Britain tends to regard graves as eternal and not to be disturbed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the United States has a lot more space, so the burial crisis is less acute.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 600,000 people die every year in the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eThe City of London cemetery, the largest in the capital and one of the biggest in Europe, is now trying to overcome British squeamishness about disturbing the dead and persuade Londoners to share a grave with a stranger.\u003cbr/\u003eBurks explains that they are using a legal loophole that allows graves with remaining space in them to be reclaimed after 75 years. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This particular cemetery, we're very fortunate in that in 1969 legislation was passed to allow us to reclaim a grave. And we can reclaim a grave that hasn't been used for 75 years and that there is depth remaining within the grave to carry out further burials,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAll around the cemetery you find signs like this one, announcing that the grave is being reclaimed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut before a new burial can take place in an old grave, a lot of work needs to be done.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery needs to research when the last interment took place, contact the last known owner of the grave, put signs on the grave and in the area, and put notices in local papers.\u003cbr/\u003eIf no one contacts them within 2 years, then they are legally allowed to reclaim the grave. \u003cbr/\u003eReclamation allows the cemetery to use the grave again, but without disturbing the remains.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So if a grave was originally sold for six people, so it was somewhere in the region of 12 feet deep, and had only been 2 interments it is very likely we could dig a grave for up to 4 interments without disturbing any remains,\" says Burks.\u003cbr/\u003eOpened in 1856, the City of London Cemetery is the largest municipal graveyard in Europe: 200 acres (80 hectares) of tranquil avenues shaded by plane, lime and chestnut trees. \u003cbr/\u003eIt hosts 1,000 burials and 2,500 cremations a year, but if it does not reuse old graves it will run out of space within five years.\u003cbr/\u003eBurks began working at the cemetery as a groundsman and gravedigger almost 25 years ago.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe is convinced that reusing these graves will buy the rapidly filling cemetery six or seven more years of burials.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many Britons have an instinctive resistance to the idea of grave-sharing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe City of London cemetery tries to make people overcome this reluctance by offering reclaimed graves in picturesque areas of the cemetery. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They've often got sort of quite, striking memorials on them that really you would be lucky to be able to afford now. So there are advantages in that respect. It's about gaining heritage, it's about, and it breathes new life into the plots. There are certain advantages,\" says Burke.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain, a crowded island, has long battled to find room for its departed residents. \u003cbr/\u003eOver the centuries they have been packed into mass graves, tucked into churchyards and laid out in sprawling cemeteries. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Harris, undertaker at T.Cribb and Sons, a funeral home that has been operating since 1881, says that traditionally people were buried in wooden coffins.\u003cbr/\u003eBut these days other caskets have become more popular.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The wicker coffin, with people going towards a more green burial, they've become quite popular, the American caskets have become popular,\" says Harris.\u003cbr/\u003eA wicker coffin would come at the price of around ï¿½400 pounds (652$ US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eAt around ï¿½2000 pounds (3261$ US Dollars), a burial in an American casket is much more expensive.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Harris says that more and more people are opting for cremation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Throughout the UK you've got a split of about 73, 74% cremation, the rest burial. This trend doesn't really vary too much,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eA cremation funeral is on average around ï¿½2400 pounds (3914$ US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eWhen comparing the size of these urns with that of a casket, it seems like cremation would be the obvious solution to London's cemetery overcrowding.\u003cbr/\u003eBurks agrees that if everyone was cremated the space issue could be solved.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he says it would be bad for the environment.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You would then have issues as far as the amount of people that are being cremated, and the greenhouse gas issues. And then you would have other issues about what you would do with the cemetery, because cemeteries are there to be used.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWith many religions, including the Muslim and Jewish faiths, and some Christian denominations, strongly favouring burial over cremation, and the number of Britons who want to be buried remaining steady at more than 25 percent, it means that cemeteries are here
