Various Solucar solar plant  \u003cbr/\u003eEurope's first commercial solar power plant has been officially inaugurated in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eThe plant, known as PS10 is located on the outskirts of the Spanish city of Sanlucar la Mayor, 25 kilometres (16 miles)  west of the city of Seville. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has a capacity of 11 megawatts (MW) and generates electricity for six thousand homes in the area.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the region of Andalusia in southern Spain the sun shines almost without interruption. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2004 Solucar, a branch of Abengoa Energy, began the construction of the PS10 plant.  \u003cbr/\u003eCosting 35 million Euros (US$45 million) the plant was designed to produce enough electricity for a medium-size town.\u003cbr/\u003eA  115 metre (377 feet) high power tower is surrounded by a field of 624 heliostats or mirrors. \u003cbr/\u003eChief technician of Solucar, Jose Antonio Antunez explains that their commodity is the sun. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sun's rays hit the mirrors which reflect radiation towards a receptor located at the top of the tower. The water in circulation through the tower heats up and turns into steam.\u003cbr/\u003eThe steam operates a giant turbine located at the base of the tower.  It is then is cooled and condensed so most of the water can be used again to generate more energy. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a few years PS10 will integrate a grid of several plants in the area that will generate 302MW of electricity.\u003cbr/\u003eDirector of Solucar, Pedro Jimenez says the plant currently has a capacity of 11 MW and will provide energy for the equivalent of six thousand homes. \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that when the whole complex is finished it will have a capacity of 302MW. This translates as electricity for 180,000 homes, the equivalent of the population of Seville. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mayor of Sanlucar la Mayor, Juan Escamez Luque says the plant has the potential to generate energy for the whole of Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that Andalusia has an abundance of sunlight. They cannot export the sunlight but they can export the energy it generates. \u003cbr/\u003ePS10 will help reduce the emission of 18,000 tons of CO2 to the atmosphere, thus helping Spain to meet its emissions quota as assigned by the global agreement, the Kyoto Protocol. \u003cbr/\u003eSolucar has already began the construction of two additional plants which are due to be operational by 2013.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen completed the entire solar plant is due to reduce emissions by up to 600,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the project is finished in 2013 it will cover an area of 800 acres (hectares in Spanish). \u003cbr/\u003eThe area of the existing PS10 plant covers 75,216 squared metres, it comprises 624 heliostats (mirrors) distributed in 35 rows.
