A pile of shoes, presumably from people wounded or killed in the blast, lay on the ground, surrounded by chunks of brick and stone.
Many in the area were too terrified to speculate who staged the assault.
The suicide bomber detonated some 550 pounds (250 kilograms) of high-intensity explosives on the crowded field in Shah Hasan Khel village during a volleyball tournament held on Friday near a meeting of anti-Taliban elders.
The elders, who had helped set up an anti-Taliban militia in the area, were probably the actual target, police said.
Lakki Marwat district is near South Waziristan, a tribal region where the army has been battling the Pakistani Taliban since October.
The military operation was undertaken with the backing of the US, which is eager for Pakistan to free its tribal belt of militants believed to be involved in attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan.
The offensive has provoked apparent reprisal attacks that had already killed more than 500 people in Pakistan before the New Year's Eve blast.
Militants have struck all across the nuclear-armed country, and they appear increasingly willing to hit groups beyond security forces.
No group claimed responsibility for Friday's blast, but that is not uncommon when many civilians are killed.
On January 31st a suicide bomber killed 16 people at a police checkpoint in a northwestern Pakistani tribal area where the military declared victory over the Taliban and al-Qaida last year, highlighting the difficulty Islamabad has in holding regions once the battle phase of its army offensives end.
The attacker, on foot, struck a market area in Khar, the main town in the Bajur tribal region, local government officials said.
Fourteen civilians and two police officers died, while 20 people were wounded, they added.
The suicide attack came a day after officials said security forces had killed 44 militants in three days of battles on the outskirts of Khar.
On February 5th two bombs have exploded in Pakistan's largest city, one outside a hospital treating victims from the earlier attack on Shiite Muslim worshippers.
Police appealed for calm following the strikes in Karachi, which took place within two hours of each other.
Officials said the first blast targeted a bus carrying worshippers, most of them women and children, killing 12 and wounding 49.
Following the first attack, police chief Waseem Ahmad appealed to Shiites in the city of more than 16 (m) million to remain calm.
"Here's the important thing, we have a procession going on, and it is continuing," he said.
Friday's blasts coincided with Arbaeen, the final day of the annual 40-day mourning period for revered Shiite figure Imam Hussein.
The first bomb was apparently attached to a motorcycle, detonating as the bus drove by.
TV footage showed security officials examining the twisted metal pieces of the wrecked motorbike.
The bus nearby appeared severely damaged.
Windows in nearby buildings also shattered.
The bus carried mainly women and children headed to a Shiite religious gathering, a senior police official said.
The second bomb exploded outside the entrance to the emergency ward at Jinnah Hospital, which was packed with victims and relatives of those killed and wounded in the earlier attack.
Government spokesman Jamil Soomro said 10 people were killed and several others were wounded.
On February 6th thousands of minority Shiite Muslims attended a mass funeral for those killed in the pair of bombings.
At least 31 people died and 170 others were wounded.
On February 17th an avalanche crashed down on a village in northwestern Pakistan, burying houses and leaving more than 50 people dead or missing, officials said.
Rescuer teams were seen digging into the snow and rubble almost two days after the avalanche.
District coordination officer Aminul Haq said they had recovered 38 bodies and they had little hope that
14 people still missing would be found alive.
Some of the injured were evacuated by helicopter while supplies were brought in for those that did not need urgent medical attention.
The avalanche came down on at least four houses in Dasu, a remote village in the mountainous Kohistan district in the northwest, which has been buffeted by heavy snow storms in recent days, a police official said.
The local mayor said the houses destroyed or buried were the homes of 52 people.
During winter, snow regularly triggers avalanches in various mountainous parts of Pakistan.
Some 24 people died in May 2009 when an avalanche hit a village in the Pakistani-controlled part of the Himalayan territory of Kashmir.
On March 8th a suicide car bomber struck a building where police interrogate high-value suspects in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore, killing at least 12 people and wounding 61 more including women taking children to school, officials said.
The attack broke what had been a relative lull in violence in Pakistan, where militant groups revile the government for its alliance with the US.
It also showed that insurgents retain the ability to strike the country's heartland, far from the Afghan border regions where al-Qaida and the Taliban have long thrived, despite army offensives aimed at wiping them out.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion fell on the Pakistani Taliban and allied militant groups.
Those groups are believed responsible for a wave of attacks that killed more than 600 people starting in October, including several in major Pakistani cities.
More recent attacks have been smaller and confined to remote northwest regions near Afghanistan.
The bomb blast comes amid reports of a Pakistani crackdown on Afghan Taliban and al-Qaida operatives using its soil.
Among the militants said to have been arrested is the Afghan Taliban's No. 2 commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
On March 12th thirty-nine people were killed and almost one hundred injured after a pair of suicide bombers targeting army vehicles detonated explosives within seconds of each other in the Pakistani city of Lahore, police said.
At least six security personnel were among the dead, a senior police official said.
The bombers, who were on foot, struck RA Bazaar, a residential and commercial neighbourhood where several security agencies have facilities.
Local Police Chief Sohail Sukhera said they still did not have all the details on the attack, but another senior police official said 39 people were killed, and another 95 were hurt.
It was the fourth major attack in Pakistan in a week, indicating Islamist militants were stepping up violence after a period of relative calm.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion quickly fell on the Pakistani Taliban and al-Qaida.
The militants are believed to have been behind scores of attacks in U.S.-allied Pakistan over the last several years, including a series of strikes that began in October and lasted around three months, killing some 600 people in apparent retaliation for an army offensive along the Afghan border.
On March 22nd police in the southwestern Pakistan city of Quetta clashed with college students protesting the assassination of a professor by unknown gunmen.
Police officials said two gunmen shot professor Fazal Bari and his driver at the gate of the college near Quetta where he taught.
The two attackers fled on motorcycles after the shooting.
Students marched through the streets of Quetta later to protest the attack.
Police responded by using tear gas and batons to disperse the protesters.
Video from the scene of the protest in Quetta showed police firing tear gas canisters into the crowd.
One student complained that they had initially staged a peaceful protest, which had only turned violent when police officers started firing into the crowd and using tear gas.
At a local hospital,
