the devil in a final rite of the hajj.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Islam's holiest sites in Saudi Arabia, an estimated 2.5 million (m) Muslims participated in this year's annual hajj pilgrimage.\u003cbr/\u003eThey held the first of three days of the stoning ritual to cleanse sins, throwing pebbles at \"al-Jamarat\" - three stone pillars symbolising the devil.\u003cbr/\u003eThe white-robed pilgrims threw seven stones at the pillars at Mina, a desert region outside the holy city of Mecca. \u003cbr/\u003eOn each of the following days they will throw 21 more pebbles, collected earlier on at the nearby rocky plain of Muzdalifah.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter Tuesday's stoning, many of the male pilgrims shaved their heads - the mark of a Muslim who has completed the hajj. \u003cbr/\u003eIslam requires that all Muslims who are financially and physically able must make the pilgrimage at least once in their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eMecca is birthplace of the 7th century prophet Muhammad and site of the holiest shrine, the Kaaba.\u003cbr/\u003eSaudi authorities have been introducing measures to prevent stampedes that have killed hundreds at al-Jamarat over the past few years. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago, 244 people were trampled to death when the crowd panicked during the stoning; 1,426 died in a similar fashion in 1990.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder a fatwa, or religious edict, issued two years ago, the stoning may now begin before dawn prayers in an attempt to stagger the crowds.\u003cbr/\u003eThe feast, called Eid al-Adha in Arabic, commemorates the prophet Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his son in God's test of the patriarch's faith. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the last moment, God substituted a sheep for the son. \u003cbr/\u003eThe story is shared by
