force since a truce between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas was agreed three weeks ago. \u003cbr/\u003eItalian marines wearing blue berets arrived by helicopter in the Mediterranean port city of Tyre to secure two beaches where the remainder of an 880-strong battalion of Italian soldiers will land through the day. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother 200 Italian troops are expected on Sunday in the capital, Beirut. \u003cbr/\u003eLieutenant Mario Massacci said the Italian soldier's task was to follow the instructions of the United Nations \"to help the situation\".\u003cbr/\u003eItaly's Defence Ministry said its troops will include marines, engineers, military police and other specialists, as well as 158 vehicles including trucks and amphibious tracked vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe force will move 20 kilometres (12 miles) inland to an area temporarily assigned to it by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL, the ministry said. \u003cbr/\u003eItalian commanders have said the troops are likely to be deployed in and around Tyre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2,000-strong UN force is to be expanded over the next few months to 15,000 under a UN Security Council resolution that paved the way for the cease-fire. \u003cbr/\u003eThe peacekeepers are supposed to deploy with an equal number of Lebanese soldiers across south Lebanon as Israeli forces withdraw from positions they took last month, leaving behind a buffer zone between Israel and Hezbollah.\u003cbr/\u003eThe presence of more UN troops in Lebanon may help calm fears of a renewal of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eFrench General Alain Pelegrini, who currently heads the UNIFIL mission, told assembled media in Tyre on Saturday that the ceasefire was \"fragile,\" and that certain violations had taken place, since the ceasefire came in to effect.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Any incident can escalate,\" he said, speaking from Tyre.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the peacekeepers will stay out of the most sensitive issues, both demanded by Israel: disarming Hezbollah and keeping the guerrillas from receiving fresh arms, especially via Lebanon's border with Syria.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly is contributing a 2,500-strong contingent to the expanded UNIFIL force, the largest national contingent so far committed.\u003cbr/\u003eEurope is providing the backbone of the force and has promised 6,900 soldiers.
