wide to Mexico's western state of Jalisco to celebrate the well known and much loved musical tradition of mariachi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city of Guadalajara is transformed as groups of musicians play throughout the city and the streets are filled with parades.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Ernesto Cano, from the University of Guadalajara, says the tradition of mariachi started in the eighteenth century.\u003cbr/\u003eArturo Chamorro, an ethnomusicologist at University of Guadalajara, says the musical tradition has a variety of influences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe music is recognised around the world as the first truly Mexican music genre and has been kept alive by families that in some cases have been playing in the same mariachi bands for more than a century.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, who are busy rehearsing, is one example of such a group.\u003cbr/\u003eFounded by Gaspar Vargas some 130 years ago, it is internationally recognised as one of Mexico's top groups.\u003cbr/\u003eJose \"Pepe\" Mart�nez has been the musical director of the group for thirty years. \u003cbr/\u003eA native of the state of Jalisco, Martinez says mariachi is very important there. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople often wonder about the origin of the word 'mariachi' but it's exact origins are still not known.\u003cbr/\u003eErnesto Cano says there have been various theories put forward over the years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan are still hard at work. \u003cbr/\u003eJose \"Pepe\" Mart�nez says his family have been involved with the group for a long time and he is the second generation of his family to play in the group.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan make sure they play at Guadalajara's mariachi festival.\u003cbr/\u003eArturo Chamorro says there are a variety of influences on the mariachi genre of music.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while mariachi groups are a common sight on the streets of Mexico, they are also an increasingly common sight on stages around the country.\u003cbr/\u003eHere the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan are playing with the Jalisco state orchestra in Guadalajara's Degollado theatre.\u003cbr/\u003eMartinez says the classical performances mean extra practice for the musicians.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother mariachi group Mariachi Camperos from the USA also take to the stage.\u003cbr/\u003eErnesto Cano says this renewed interest in the musical genre mean people are working hard to preserve traditional mariachi techniques and keep original mariachi roots alive.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the annual festival older mariachi musicians are given special treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not just Mexican mariachis that attend the festival.  \u003cbr/\u003eMart�nez says mariachi music has an international following.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd here in Guadalajara, mariachi bands have come from all over the world.\u003cbr/\u003eMusic teacher Ernesto Cano says the music is one of many things that culturally
