Cultural Club who recreated the Virgo Vestalis Maxima, and an anthropologist by trade.
Serpi is now most senior among the six modern priestesses.
She says that the Vestals were privileged and powerful because they enjoyed degrees of freedom that not many other women at the time of the Roman Republic and the Empire could have.
The most famous Vestal Virgin in the history of Rome comes form the legend about the foundation of the city.
In Rome's founding myth, the daughter of a king deposed by his brother was forced to become a vestal virgin to prevent her from having children.
But Rhea Silvia became pregnant with sons of the god Mars.
When the infants were discovered, the princess was imprisoned and the babies were set adrift in a basket on the Tiber River - which today winds its way through Rome.
The twins floated ashore safely and were suckled by a she-wolf until they were rescued by a shepherd, who raised them.
When they learned the story of their past, they killed the usurper Amulius, restored Rhea Silvia's father - Numitor - to the throne, and set off to found a city on the site where they were taken care of by the wolf.
Serpi says that Vestal Virgins who lost their virginity were punished by death.
As tradition dictated that their blood could not be shed, they were buried alive.
Vesta, was the mythological Roman goddess of hearth and home.
Meanwhile at the gates of the Villa Gregoriana male members of the S.P.Q.R. (Senate and Roman People) Cultural Club were wielding their swords in a less sedate cultural re-enactment.
Renato Di Cicco, a member of the scientific committee of the S.P.Q.R. Cultural Club says that this type of archaeology helps people to understand why Romans did things in a certain way, he says for example that by having 'mock fights' with a typical Roman sword helps to replicate the way the Romans fought.
Di Cicco says that the typical roman sword called 'glaius' is shorter than normal swords and more deadly in a scuffle, than longer swords.
The modern soldiers re-create ancient military formations and techniques, dressed in full roman armour, but in places some compromises have to be made with authenticity.
Giorgio Franchetti, President of S.P.Q.R. Cultural Club explains that coyote fur is used rather than wolf fur, as wolves are a protected species.
In the temple and on the battlefield 'experimental archaeology', is bringing the past to life.
Keyword wacky

<button aria-expanded='false'
