Ground shot of garbage caught up in barbed wire on gate outside Faliron Beach Volleyball Centre\u003cbr/\u003eInternational Olympic Committee (IOC)  inspectors are in London for three days to asses the progress of the city's 2012 Olympic stadium, an imposing arena of steel and concrete that is rapidly taking shape as the showpiece venue of the games.\u003cbr/\u003eOther cities, like Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004, have gone through the same process, and now the legacy of the their multi-(b) billion US dollar investment can be assessed.\u003cbr/\u003eSydney's Olympic Park has remained a key sporting, entertainment and business venue in Australia's largest city.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the end of 2010, the venue is expecting to have clocked up 10 (m) million visits to the site, according to the Sydney Olympic Park Authority.\u003cbr/\u003eSydney's former Olympic venue currently hosts around 5,000 events per year, ranging from small corporate functions to sell-out sporting matches and concerts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aquatic centre hosts national and international swimming, diving and water polo events, and runs swimming lessons for thousands of school children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Olympic diving facilities were used by young hopefuls during the Easter break, and the leisure pool and recently installed children's water play area attracts an average of 100,000 visitors per month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sydney Olympic Park Authority is responsible for managing and developing the 640-hectare (1,580-acre) venue.\u003cbr/\u003eIts Chairman, the Honourable Michael Knight, was Minister for the Olympics from 1995 to 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that Sydney's Olympic facilities experience greater ongoing use than those in some other cities because they were designed with future activities in mind.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main Olympic stadium was downsized after the games so it could continue to host large sporting finals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We tried to plan our venues in a way where the post-games use was built in from the beginning,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eFor two weeks each year, the showground, which was used for baseball during the Olympics, hosts Sydney's Easter Show.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 900,000 visitors attend the event which features farm animals, competitions and rural produce, along with fairground rides and stalls.\u003cbr/\u003eSydney's main stadiums still host regular events.\u003cbr/\u003eANZ Stadium, formerly Stadium Australia, is a venue for soccer, rugby league, rugby union, cricket and Australian Rules football matches.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the appeal of visiting the park for its status as a former Olympic venue gradually diminishes over time, planners have been forced to take a new direction.\u003cbr/\u003eOffice buildings and residential apartments are being built on the site, with a view to developing Olympic Park into a self-contained suburb over the next two decades.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With the new master plan that takes us through to 2030 we should have very substantial numbers of residents, maybe about 14 or 15 thousand residents on site, and a very substantial number of workers, perhaps 28 or 29 thousand workers, on site by 2030,\" Knight says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe park is currently home to around 8,500 workers from over 100 companies, including Samsung and Commonwealth Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eAccommodation in the former athletes' village next to the park has already been transformed into a new residential suburb, Newington, and the apartments are connected to the park's water recycling and solar power schemes.\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast, the grounds of the main Olympic complex in Athens lie derelict and unused, a long way from International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge's prediction that they were \"going to leave a great legacy to Greece and to Athens for generations to come.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNearly five years after the Athens games evidence of Greece having hosting them is hard to find as most venues stand eerily quiet and empty.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors would be hard pressed to locate some Olympic venues as some have been transformed into malls or ministry buildings that veil their Olympic past. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers sit abandoned with locks on their gates awaiting their final fate - Athens' main Olympic stadium is seen by few not holding a ticket to a sporting event. \u003cbr/\u003eFor a country heavily dependent on tourism, Greece has done little to use its Olympic legacy to lure visitors. Critics say a huge opportunity has been lost.\u003cbr/\u003eStratos Safioleas, Manager for International Media Relations for the Athens 2004 Organising Committee and Media Adviser for the Chicago 2016 bid, said tourists who would like to see the new stadia only \"find locked doors.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome venues see visitors through their post-Olympic lives: the Badminton facility has become a state-of-the-art theatre that has hosted many concerts and theatrical productions; the International Broadcast Centre houses a mall; the Main Press Centre is home to the Health Ministry.\u003cbr/\u003eMany venues, including the main Olympic stadium, host sporting events; but hardly any are open to visitors on non-competition days. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the few exceptions is the all-marble Panathenian Stadium, also known as the Kallimarmaro, which was home the first modern Olympics in 1896.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists flock to this open-air, horseshoe-shaped venue on a daily basis.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the all-marble stadium, the Hellenikon Indoor Arena gets an occasional visitor when it hosts exhibitions and trade shows.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one visits the Faliron Beach
