And the reason we find that interesting is because most of us come from an intensive care back ground, and all our patients have Hypoxia as a fundamental problem. The difficulty for us is that studying Hypoxia in those patients is very difficult because they have lots of other things going on, the problem that brought them to intensive care. So this gives us the opportunity to look at a cleaner signal so we can get a better handle on what hypoxia is causing directly."
AP File, Mt Everest, Nepal
6. We will have a tent like this at Everest base camp, and also higher up on the mountain. They are especially made tents to keep us warm and so the equipment can function well at high altitude. We have a selection of the equipment that we will be taking up the mountain with us here now. Probably the most core component is the exercise bike. The trekkers and the climbers who come on the trip we be exercising on the bicycle, and we will be measuring the amount of oxygen that they will use whilst exercising on the bike. They will be studied at sea level before they leave, and along they way up to a large laboratory at Everest base camp, looking at their response to low oxygen levels. And the second element is that we have a team of climbing doctors who will be hopefully ascending hopefully to the summit of Everest. They will be looking in more detail studying each other, and looking at lung function and brain function, and making some unique measurements of oxygen levels hopefully right up too the summit of everest."
AP File Mt Everest, Nepal
13. Wide of Mt Everest
Visitors to the Science Museum in London have been able to step inside the tent which will house the world's highest medical laboratory.
Xtreme Everest is a working group of intrepid medics who climb Mount Everest to find out the effects of high altitude on the human body.
The results could help provide insights into the treatment of intensive care patients.
At 8,844 metres high Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world.
It belongs to the Himalayan Mountain range situated between Nepal and China.
Climbing Mount Everest is hugely challenging and very dangerous.
On May 10th 1996, a storm on Mount Everest resulted in eight people who were trying to climb the mountain dying on a single day.
Above 25,000 feet, the air on Everest holds contains only a third of oxygen compared to that at sea level.
This results in an increased chance of hypothermia, frostbite, high-altitude pulmonary, when lungs fill with fluid, and high altitude cerebral edema, when the brain swells up.
The Everest team will be testing a group of more than 200 volunteers, who will climb to the base camp and conduct tests on the human body's reaction in extreme conditions.
Volunteers and team leaders and doctors will travel to Everest next spring.
It will also be the only opportunity to try pedalling on the high tech Lode Corival exercise bike, that will be used in one of the most high profile medical experiments of the decade, before medical experts take all this hi-tech kit on their Xtreme Everest expedition next spring.
Visitors at london's Science Museum have already been able to go inside the Milsys Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelter (DRASH) tent that will be positioned around 7,000 metres (23,000 feet) on Everest's Western front, having been carried up there by seven climbers in 14 separate parts.
Visitors were also able to try on the extreme clothing the medics will have to wear during the expedition.
Led by the extreme medicine expert, Dr Mike Grocott from the UCL Institute of Human Health and Performance, the team will climb Mount Everest, carrying out experiments on themselves as they go up.
As they climb, the team will take blood and monitor oxygen levels to study how the human body copes with extreme physical stress.
The results of the Extreme Everest experiments could help anyone who has problems relating to low oxygen levels in the blood - from babies in incubators, to those with Cystic Fibrosis and people with lung diseases.
Visitors had the oxygen levels of their blood tested with a simple electronic device that clips on to the finger.
Dr Mike Grocott believes that at 8,850m at the summit of Everest, there's so little oxygen getting into the lungs that the body starts shutting down.
These extreme conditions mimic what it's like for patients in intensive care.
The Xtreme-Everest scientific studies have been supported by a research grant from the medical gases specialist BOC Medical, although the organisers are seeking further sponsorship.
The exhibition at London's Science Museum ran
