The majestic sunderi trees which make up the bulk of the  mangrove are suffering from a mysterious wasting condition.\u003cbr/\u003eAt ground level they appear healthy -- but the jungle canopy is withering.\u003cbr/\u003eShamsul Huda is a forester entrusted with the care of the Sundarban. He says there  doesn't appear to be any cure to the condition.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Originally the sunderi was about  70 per cent of total trees but now it has reduced to  40 per cent  so we are losing the biggest trees and good trees.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Shamsul Huda, forest conservation officer\u003cbr/\u003eThis unique ecosystem is the result of the confluence of salt and fresh water at the  mouth of the Ganges.\u003cbr/\u003eA rich and diverse fish fauna supports more than 270 species of birds.\u003cbr/\u003eSpotted deer, jungle fowl, rhesus monkeys, pythons and the Royal Bengal tiger are  among the exotic creatures living here.\u003cbr/\u003eBut all this rich and varied life is now threatened by the sickness which has gripped the  mangrove.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cause: thick silt which is clogging up the sunderi trees' characteristic breathing  nodules, preventing life-giving gas exchange from taking place.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Mohammed Abdur Rahman, a forestry lecturer at the nearby Khulna University says  dams further up the Ganges have reduced the river flow and are allowing silt to build up.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says urgent action must be taken to save the mangrove.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"And this Sundarban, it represents about 40 per cent of the total standing, total  productive forest in Bangladesh. So you can realise the importance of Sundarban in the  context  of Bangladesh. On top of that, that Sundarban is the last abode of the all- famous Royal Bengal tiger. Scientists  say the increased salinity has pushed up the tigers' blood pressure and made it difficult  for them to catch their natural prey.\u003cbr/\u003eTigers are increasingly stalking livestock and have even attacked humans.\u003cbr/\u003eFishermen at this village have erected this mock tiger to try to keep the real ones at  bay.\u003cbr/\u003eBut tigers are only the beginning of their problem. Catches are a quarter of what they  were ten years ago and still declining.\u003cbr/\u003eThis man is singing about his life as a fisherman.
