Some melodies of the Jewish Spanish tradition can even be found in some texts in the chiloe folk tradition (from Chiloe island, 1100km south of Santiago), and that was very attractive to us. seen as a product of Modern Europe and Catholic Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eSo it is a little surprising that a style of music that disappeared in Europe soon after Columbus' discovery of the Americas, is experiencing a revival in Chile.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the late 1980s, a group of music students found themselves drawn to sounds and instruments that originated far across the ocean in Medieval Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eThey found the mythology and ancient style of dress refreshing and different, the melodies pleasing and easily  created.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is often said that the Middle Ages ended when Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the same year Columbus' benefactor, the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, unified the country under a Christian monarchy and expelled the Jews and Arabs from Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eLatin America's pre-Columbian civilisations were already firmly established by the time the Spanish conquistadors arrived from across the ocean around 1500 AD.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish and Portuguese invasions of much of Latin America destroyed those indigenous civilisations. \u003cbr/\u003eMario Sandoval is one of the members of the Tritonus duo, which is part of a larger group of medieval musicians. \u003cbr/\u003eSandoval says they want to educate children about the mysteries of the Middle Ages, illustrating the history lessons with music. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that they are re-interpreting the music, and the way the instruments were played. \u003cbr/\u003e'In Taverna' another a musical group which formed six years ago, comprised of music education teachers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe director, Pedro Espinoza, says he discovered Medieval music whilst studying music education. \u003cbr/\u003eEspionza says that many people only think of Gregorian chants when Medieval music is discussed, but he says there is also a rich history of travelling musicians like minstrels and troubadours. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that they discovered many influences traced back to Spanish Jewish music, can be found also in traditional  Chilean music, as immigrants brought the melodies from mainland Spain in the 16th century. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother musical group is 'Calenda Maia', which means the first day of May, the day of the consecration of spring.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the time when European tradition says life beats death, light beats darkness. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also the title of a medieval musical composition by Raimbaut of Vaqueiras, a Provencal troubadour (medieval musician and singer).  \u003cbr/\u003eJorge Matamala, a founder member of Calenda Maia, says that although the Middle Ages are distant in time and geography for Latin America, the Spanish language still binds Latin America
