When he resisted they shot him and his three colleagues. No group has yet claimed responsibility. \u003cbr/\u003eThe priests were members of The Order of the White Fathers. \u003cbr/\u003eSet up in 1868 to spread the Gospel and halt slavery in North Africa, there are 2300 -  two thousand three hundred - members of diocese spread throughout the world preaching the word of God. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the French government's fear for French citizens and other foreigners living in Algeria, 28 White Fathers remain in Algeria. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir deaths brought the number to 76 foreigners killed since the Islamic Armed Group announced a campaign to drive foreigners from Algeria 15 months ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe total French death toll stands at 25.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at the Paris rectory,  the head of the Order of White Fathers, Pere Richard recounted the aftermath of the assassination but he told APTV that the details surrounding the killings remain a mystery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three eldest priests had lived peacefully in Tizi-Ouzou for forty years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe order, he says, was a respected and integral member of the town's community. \u003cbr/\u003eSo we received a phone call from Algiers yesterday, telling us that the four fathers who had been living in Tizi-Ouzou had just been killed. They were there since many years, except the youngest one who had been there only for two years. The other three fathers had been there for at least forty years.\u003cbr/\u003eWe don't know much about the facts. They were living happily with the people and a small group of terrorists came in. They asked them to come down in the courtyard and then they were shot. \u003cbr/\u003eWe had the intention to have the -- in Algiers but I just received a phone call from Algiers saying that the people from Tizi-Ouzou have insisted that the burial should take place in Tizi-Ouzou and this shows how much those fathers were really integrated into the population of Tizi-Ouzou.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir wish was to live with the people, to share their joys, to share their sorrows, to share their risk and even death.
