ballots to select a new parliament and end more than a century of absolute monarchy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vote for the 47-seat National Assembly was held at the request of the king, despite deep reservations among much of the population about moving away from stable royal rule to the potentially divisive democratic system.\u003cbr/\u003eMonday's vote was the latest step in a slow engagement with the world that began in the early 1960s when Bhutan - sandwiched between India and China - was a medieval society with no paved roads, no electricity and no hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eTelevision arrived only in 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country of about 600,000 people now has a cash economy, and it's even likely to soon join the World Trade Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the capital Thimphu, queues could be seen outside polling stations, with residents eager to cast their votes.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the election commission, there are 318,465 registered voters in Bhutan who will be electing 47 members to the National Assembly. \u003cbr/\u003eAll the candidates are graduates, while many former ministers are in the running.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Election Commission of Bhutan held two rounds of mock polls last year to prepare the electorate for the vote.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the first democratically elected government in place, the king will still remain the head of state.
