Pull out from Mobbs looking at his disconnected water pipe
An Australian family have spent a small fortune making their house as sustainable as possible, saving hundreds of thousands of liters of water and a tonne of greenhouse gas emissions.
Experts say those without the financial power to completely eco-fit their house can still make a difference.
From outside, Alicia Campbell and Jason Young's Sydney home looks no different from the others in their suburban cul de sac.
But it has a secret: it is almost completely self-sufficient.
The couple recently spent around 80,000 Australian dollars (US $66,500) on power and water-saving devices for their new four-bedroom home in Turramurra, a leafy residential neighborhood in northern Sydney.
The house sucks no water from Australia's drought-stricken reservoirs, it recycles almost everything, from food scraps to sewage, and even pumps electricity back into the power grid.
With Australia in the grip of its worst drought on record and doomsday warnings mounting about the dangers of global warming, residents in the world's driest inhabited continent are increasingly taking it upon themselves to reduce their impact on the environment.
Many are starting with small steps, taking advantage of government rebates for energy-efficient light bulbs and water-saving taps, showerheads and washing machines.
But others are taking more drastic action.
Campbell, 38, first read about solar power while leafing through a gardening magazine some 10 years ago, and decided it was time to act. When she and her husband began building their home in 1999, they resolved to make it an experiment in self-sufficiency.
She said she started off by making small steps.
Campbell made sure all of the appliances within the house, toilets, showerheads, taps, were as efficient as possible for energy and electricity
Before building on the house began, a team of workers laid a 25,000 liter (6,600 gallon) swimming pool capped by a steel lid under the home's future driveway.
A network of drainpipes collects water from the roof, and feeds it to the underground pool, which acts as the house's inbuilt reservoir.
Each time it rains, a simple diversion mechanism directs the first few litres (gallons) of water into the garden, cleaning any heavy metals, leaves or bird droppings off the roof. The rest flows into the tank.
Rainwater is then pumped back into the house for drinking, washing and flushing the toilet.
On the roof, a bank of 18 solar panels generate the house's electricity throughout the day, feeding any excess power back to Sydney's energy grid. A computer monitor inside the house shows that, since February, the panels stopped some 1.2 tons of coal-fired carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
Campbell says she and her husband just wanted to make the house as environmentally sustainable as possible.
In the yard, the family's two chickens, called Itchy and Scratchy, pick at vegetable scraps near a large compost heap that recycles the household's food waste.
Conservationists say the average Australian household produces around 980 kilograms (2,160 pounds) of waste each year, most of which ends up in landfills.
And having kids around isn't a problem.
Campbell says her 7 year-old-son Zane questions her when she tries to do something he thinks is ecologically wasteful.
And as even the family's sewage is recycled onsite, it's no surprise
Three 5,000 liter (1,320 gallon) tanks filled with bacteria, sand and gravel dissolve and purify the waste before it is finally treated with an ultraviolet filter that kills any remaining germs or viruses.
Campbell uses the water in her garden, but insists it is also safe to drink.
And the savings are significant: the Campbell-Youngs have saved one tonne of greenhouse gases and 236,000 liters of water.
While it may seem a daunting task, Michael Mobbs, a consultant on eco-friendly housing developments, says anyone can do it.
And according to Freddy Sharp, from Easy Being Green, it doesn't have to cost the earth.
He says there are small steps consumers can take to minimise their greenhouse gas emissions.
There are no reliable statistics on how many households have taken up sustainable technologies in recent years, though experts agree the numbers are rising as Australians grow more concerned about climate change.
Sharp says there has been a real market shift in understanding the issue over the last 18 months.
The Campbell-Youngs are thrilled with their green house, but the project has not been cheap.
However, until the cost of sustainable technologies comes down, Campbell says conservationists will be hard pressed to convince mainstream builders to follow suit.
Despite living one of the sunniest countries on earth, most Australians use coal-fired power, not solar, for their household electricity, making them the world's worst greenhouse gas emitters per capita.
Michael Mobbs, a consultant on eco-friendly housing developments and office projects, says government regulations are currently the biggest hurdle to encouraging more green homes.
Clients are reminded:
