Wide of meeting\u003cbr/\u003eThe Syrian president, Bashar Assad, arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran on Saturday for a two-day visit, accompanied by a high ranking delegation.\u003cbr/\u003eAssad was greeted by Iranian president Mahmood Ahmadinejad at the presidential palace, where the two inspected an honour guard before going into a meeting.\u003cbr/\u003eSyria is Iran's closest Arab ally and the two leaders were expected to discuss Tehran's nuclear ambitions in\u003cbr/\u003eSaturday's meeting, as well as other regional issues..\u003cbr/\u003eIran faces an informal two-week deadline to stop expanding its uranium enrichment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe deadline was set on July 19 by the U.N. Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso, on a request from France, Assad promised earlier in July to try to persuade Iran to offer proof to the West\u003cbr/\u003ethat it isn't developing nuclear weapons. \u003cbr/\u003eIran denies the charge and says uranium enrichment is only for electricity production. \u003cbr/\u003eThe visit will be Assad's third to Iran - Syria's staunch regional ally since the election of Ahmadinejad in 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eHis last visit was in February
