It happens about every six months or so. \u003cbr/\u003eA lunar eclipse has no great importance astronomically, but can be enjoyed by many people without special equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Space Agency said the eclipse, which began at about 23:30 GMT, lasted for about two hours.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile seeing the moon disappearing and reappearing is one of the most exciting prospects of the incident, viewers also got to see the moon turn different colours, ranging from orange to pink.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say the tints are caused by sunlight filtering through the clouds and dust in our atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Washington DC, a small group of amateur astronomers gathered at the National Capital Astronomy Club to observe the lunar eclipse.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, residents gathered at the Georgetown waterfront to take advantage of the final total eclipse in 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eBritons, especially those in the south of the country, only caught a glimpse of the lunar eclipse.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many of those living in the north of the country and Scotland, the spectacle of the moon disappearing behind the Earth's shadow was obscured by dense cloud. They will have to wait until October next year or 2007 for a repeat performance.\u003cbr/\u003eStargazers in Paris were able to see a total lunar eclipse under a completely clear sky. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough not of great scientific importance, a lunar eclipse has been called \"a grand spectacle of nature\".\u003cbr/\u003eIt happens when the Sun, Earth and moon are aligned in space, so that the full moon passes through the Earth's shadow, causing a dark brown, grey or red disc in the sky.\u003cbr/\u003eThe colours vary with each eclipse depending on the amount of dust and cloud in the Earth's atmosphere, which affects how the light gets filtered and bent. In central London, the eclipse took on a dark grey hue.\u003cbr/\u003eEclipses have been described as an example of the \"clockwork\" of the Universe. They are regular and predictable.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1503, Christopher Columbus, stranded in the Caribbean, used a lunar eclipse he knew would take place to impress the natives and secure respect and fear, as well as a regular supply of food.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last total lunar eclipse fully visible from the UK was on January 9 2001. The next two total lunar eclipses fully visible from the UK are on October 28, 2004 and March 3, 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo weeks after the lunar eclipse, on November 23, there is a total eclipse of the
