It will go to the moon and orbit it and solve what we believe have been a couple mysteries that have been around since the Apollo days,\" said Jim Green, NASA's Planetary Science Director.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists involved in the 280 (m) million US dollar, moon-orbiting mission want to examine the lunar atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eThe atmosphere is so thin and delicate, in fact, that spacecraft landings can disturb it. \u003cbr/\u003eSo, according to NASA scientists, now is the time to go, as there are concerns that other countries and even private companies will soon start bombarding the moon with flights and fouling up the atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eGreen explained that the Apollo astronauts experienced high volumes of dust during missions. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother puzzle, dating back decades, is whether dust actually levitates from the lunar surface.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And so with LADEE we plan to fly through these dust clouds, actually impact the spacecraft with the dust, and really try to understand where the dust is being lofted and how it's getting up there,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 844-pound spacecraft has three science instruments as well as laser communication test equipment that could revolutionise data relay. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA hopes to eventually replace its traditional radio systems with laser communications, which would mean faster bandwidth using significantly less power and smaller devices.\u003cbr/\u003e\"LADEE has a high speed link back to Earth and we'll use laser light to do it. We have just a few wavelengths in the infrared that will beam straight back to our observatories here on the Earth. That'll enable us to send high rates of data, more than 620 megabits per second will be blasting back to Earth. So this is our very first test into deep space of these high-speed laser links,\" said Green.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spacecraft will be manoeuvred from 30 miles (48.2 kms) to 90 miles (144.8 kms) above the lunar surface, where it will collect data for just over three months.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the quick three-day Apollo flights to the moon, LADEE will need a full month to reach Earth's closest neighbour. \u003cbr/\u003eLADEE, which is the size of a small car, is expected to reach the moon on October 6.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Air Force Minotaur V rocket, built by Orbital Sciences Corp., provided the ride from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility.\u003cbr/\u003eWallops was chosen for LADEE because of the Minotaur V rocket, comprised of converted intercontinental ballistic missile motors belonging to the Air Force. \u003cbr/\u003eA US-Russian treaty limits the number of launch sites because of the missile parts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Virginia launch was a change of venue for NASA, which normally launches moon missions from Cape Canaveral, Florida, but it provided a rare light show along the East Coast for those blessed with clear skies.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA expected the launch from Virginia's Eastern Shore to be visible, weather permitting, as far south as South Carolina, as far north as Maine and as far west as Pittsburgh.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mission will last six months and end with a suicide plunge into the moon.\u003cbr/\u003eWallops Island, Virginia - 6 September 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
