Wide of street, bus passing\u003cbr/\u003eIn a city as densely populated as Hong Kong, living space is hard to come by, let alone space to grow plants and vegetables.\u003cbr/\u003eBut those keen to see a bit more green in this concrete jungle are now setting their sights high by creating roof top farms.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople living and working in Hong Kong are becoming more and more aware of the environment around them.\u003cbr/\u003eTo help turn the city a little more green, elements of traditional farms are being brought to the roof tops of buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eThis kind of farming is not only seen as being beneficial to the environment, but also a way to relieve stress and gain satisfaction from harvesting crops.\u003cbr/\u003eOsbert Lam, founder of City Farm, has been running a roof top green area for more than a year. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is good for the whole city,\" says Lam. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For example, in this building, people are already paying less for electricity bills. As we put plants on the surface of the rooftop, it has created a big difference in temperature. The temperature difference in a place with and without shade is at least five to six degrees Celsius.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe 10,000 square foot (929 square metre) roof top farm consists of 350 boxes that allow people to grow plants of their choice.\u003cbr/\u003eA monthly rent, ranging from $19 US dollars to $26 US dollars, is charged per month.\u003cbr/\u003eLam says this kind of farm is gaining popularity and that he has around 30 people on a waiting list for a spot.\u003cbr/\u003eCity Farm also provides help with farming techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eTina Wu grows vegetables at the roof top facility.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's greening the city. I think it is great and I appreciate it very much,\" Wu says. \u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong is known for its hot summers, with air conditioning widely in use to make life more comfortable.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Professor Chi Yung Jim, Chair of Geography, University of Hong Kong, says air conditioning increases overall air temperatures and power plants emit more greenhouse gases.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Jim, roof top vegetation could help to bring down those air temperatures.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Any vegetation put on the rooftop, whether it is farming or just ordinary horticultural plants, will help to reduce the temperature,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As soon as you put down soil and vegetation on the roof top, you will have evaporation. buildings, as it may damage the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd he says you must check the load bearing capacity, the maximum weight a structure can support, before putting any plants on
