Close of newly weds placing rings on fingers and dancing\u003cbr/\u003eMarriage around the world takes many forms. \u003cbr/\u003eIn some countries individuals find their own partners, in others their weddings are arranged from an early age. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Egypt many people prefer to be introduced to their wife or husband via a matchmaker, but there are some who have gone against local conventions and prefer to find their future spouses by themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eMaha is getting ready for her wedding to her fiancee Wahel. \u003cbr/\u003eLike many couples around the world they were introduced by a matchmaker. \u003cbr/\u003eIn modern Egypt, many young people dream of romance and love and openly date partners of their own choosing. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever when it comes to the time to marry, romance is suddenly abandoned to family consensus as to whom would be the best partner.\u003cbr/\u003eThus matchmaking in Egypt is very common. \u003cbr/\u003eMaha and Wahel  are young professionals. He is an engineer and she is a marketing specialist. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile they dated others in the past, they were matched together before their wedding. \u003cbr/\u003eThe matchmaker in this case was Wahel's friend, who approached the bride's family.\u003cbr/\u003eWahel had met Maha's parents before courting her. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a prospective groom he had to convince them that he could support her at an acceptable economic standard. \u003cbr/\u003eMaha's mother says that arranged marriage is the best because that way \"the groom is known to the family\"\u003cbr/\u003eSocial worker Samira Noor says that although more young people are choosing to marry for love, she is uncertain if those marriages will be a stable as one where the couple are matched according to their suitability and \u003cbr/\u003eIf the virtues of the two who get married are suitable, and if stability between them exists, a successful marriage, and love, is expected to follow.\u003cbr/\u003eSome Egyptians seek marriage through state authorised matchmakers.\u003cbr/\u003eAmer Abdul Razeq prays before consulting the matchmaker about his future wife. \u003cbr/\u003eAmer is an architect by profession. \u003cbr/\u003eState Matchmaker Muhi Abdallah takes down Amer's essential details: his income, his profession and his family background.\u003cbr/\u003eThe matchmaker enters the information into a data base. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a later date, the matchmaker will arrange a clandestine meeting so Amer can view a potential bride without her even realising it.\u003cbr/\u003eIf he is attracted to her, a meeting between the families will be arranged.\u003cbr/\u003eMuhi Abdallah says that choosing a wife is a serious business and an important decision. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever some young Egyptian women aren't keen on matchmaking. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are determined to find their own \"prince charming\" and refuse arranged marriages.\u003cbr/\u003eMaha Mandour has already rejected two arranged marriage proposals. \u003cbr/\u003eMaha says that she is waiting to find the perfect man herself not matter how long it takes. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Arab culture a woman's freedom is more restricted than in other societies.\u003cbr/\u003eConsequently a woman who prefers to choose her husband on her own is quite unusual and can some times be frowned
