This blowtorch is perhaps not too hot to handle -...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIran's expertise in nanotechnology is on show at this expo in Tehran. \u003cbr/\u003eThe expo is an opportunity for Iranian companies to showcase their latest products, and to woo potential investors. \u003cbr/\u003eThis blowtorch is perhaps not too hot to handle - with the right protection. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors at this nanotechnology expo in Tehran are being encouraged to test the products - on their fingers. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir hands are covered in a fire retardant gel - produced using nanotechnology - which forms a protective barrier between the flame and the skin.\u003cbr/\u003eEbrahim Allahdad, founder and director of the Fakhr Andish Arya Company, which produces the gel, says the product can withstand extreme temperatures.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This gel can both temporarily and permanently resist direct and indirect fire with a heat of up to 1,600 degrees (Centigrade - 2,912 Fahrenheit) for 45 minutes in the form of resin and up to 3,000 degrees (Centigrade - 5,432 Fahrenheit) in the form of a gel for a duration that varies depending on the power of the heat source.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAllahdad's product is one of the many on show at the Seventh NanoTech expo in Tehran.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 260 nanotech products are being showcased at the exhibition, promoted by 155 firms - 85 of them from the private sector.\u003cbr/\u003eNanotechnology is the science and engineering of materials at the level of atoms, molecules and particles that are even smaller than an atom.\u003cbr/\u003eIt works with particles so tiny that they are measured in nanometres - equal to one-millionth of a millimetre.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing this technology, naturally occurring substances can be manipulated and remade into materials with targeted functions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council offers up to 100,000 USD in investment funding to any company that it believes is capable of creating marketable nano products. \u003cbr/\u003eGhazal Bahrehbar, the sales manager of the Sharif Nano Aras Company, is using the exhibition to show off a waterproof surface-coating material. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company says the product can be sprayed onto almost any surface to prevent it from absorbing water and to increase its durability.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a hydrophobic product that can be applied to any material surface such as wood, rock, brick, ceramic, fabric, colour, glass, wallpaper and composite materials, and make them hydrophobic. It can also keep a surface dust-free up to 50 to 70 percent,\" says Bahrehbar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Amin Asia Fanavar Pars Company has created a planetary ball mill that grinds almost any material down to nanometre size.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It can grind down any kind of substance, from crisp materials to minerals and metals. To build this machine, we reverse-engineered its European replica. We did not have an Iranian model of the machine in the country and we were able to rebuild it by using references, catalogues, and trial and error through reverse engineering and made a product that can even be exported. In fact, the price of this device is one fifth of its foreign counterpart,\" says Amin Asia Fanavar Pars employee Shervin Shayegan. \u003cbr/\u003eSome nanotechnology is being put to use for medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eNanotech researcher Elnaz Tamjid has developed scaffolding made of nanocomposite material that allows the faster reconstruction of damaged bone and tissue.\u003cbr/\u003eTamjid is hoping to receive government funding to make her product commercially viable.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I managed to create three-dimensional bone structures with completely controlled and orderly cavities by using this scaffolding. The scaffolding is adaptable to the shape and size of the damaged bone. One of its applications is in face and jaw surgery. For example, patients who suffer from jaw bone depletion, where it is impossible to drill a hole in their jaw for a tooth implant, can use the scaffolding to reconstruct bone,\" Tamjid says. \u003cbr/\u003eIran's government is investing in products such as Tamjid's to further develop the nanotechnology industry.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Iranian government figures, Iran is now a regional leader in the field. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Hamed Afshari, Secretary of the 7th Nanotechnology Exhibition, says he hopes Iran will be able to make headway in the international market.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the area of nanotechnology, we rank as the seventh country in the world and possess sufficient infrastructure and human resources to step into the realm of commercial nanotechnology. We hope in the year ahead, that Iranian science-based companies active in nanotechnology will capture a remarkable portion of the international nano market,\" he says, referring Iranian government data. \u003cbr/\u003eIran established the Nanotechnology Initiative Council in 2003 with the aim of driving the domestic growth of the sector. \u003cbr/\u003eAfshari says the government wants Iran to continue to expand in this sector. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is our target that within the next decade Iran, which comprises one-percent of the world's population, should own more than one percent of the market in this technology.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNanotechnology is changing the future of some products, and it is also in use today.
