three-hour journey around the eastern shore of Manhattan island on Saturday took the president and guests up to the United Nations and then down to the Statue of Liberty at the southern tip of Manhattan.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the evening, President Chen gave a pro-American speech to his guests, thanking the US government for clearing the way for his trip to New York. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday night, Chen received the annual Human Rights Award award sponsored by the New York-based International League of Human Rights.\u003cbr/\u003eChen, who has held the Taiwanese presidency since May 2000, was visiting New York on a three-day stopover on his way to Panama for its centenary celebrations. \u003cbr/\u003eThe visit is widely seen as an effort to solidify Taiwanese-US ties, despite the absence of official diplomatic relations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States cut official ties with Taiwan in 1979 and recognised the People's Republic of China.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe communist government in mainland China considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory and vows to retake it by force if necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eChen leaves for Panama on
