Wide of elderly couple walking into surgery \u003cbr/\u003eBritish doctors begin trials today ( NOTE EMBARGO) of an iPad memory test they believe will give early identification of people who have risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe test takes just ten minutes and it's creators claim it'll allow health workers to deal with patients with memory problems quickly.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At this end are people who have a really good memory for their age. Touch the person where you would stand.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt's one of the first questions asked by the CANTAB mobile.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the people taking this test will be uncertain of their cognitive function and will be seeking reassurance from their doctor.\u003cbr/\u003eKathy Hayes's doctor isn't taking part in the trial, so she's asked to come to this surgery to try out the test.\u003cbr/\u003eA retired civil servant Hayes has travelled the world and remained independent.\u003cbr/\u003eBut recently crippling arthritis has taken its toll on her health.\u003cbr/\u003eHayes has already had three hip replacements, now she's waiting for shoulder replacements.\u003cbr/\u003eBut what has knocked her confidence of late is her growing anxiety that her memory is beginning to be less reliable than it always has been.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says for elderly people the biggest fear is Alzheimer's disease, or other serious forms of dementia. \u003cbr/\u003eHayes needs assistance with almost every element of her life, from fastening her underwear to every other daily chore at home.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"Osteo (arthritis) and rheumatoid arthritis have consumed my life, but not my mind so I want to keep my mind active and the anxiety is coming because I have memory loss.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe CANTAB test asks the patient to remember the position of shapes and symbols.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have to remember which symbol was in which box.\u003cbr/\u003eEventually six symbols have to be identified. \u003cbr/\u003eThe responses are made through the touch screen and the simplicity of the words used means it's easy to reproduce the test in lots of different languages.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's based on a system called paired associate learning which is widely used in the medical and scientific community for years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe CANTAB mobile was produced by Cambridge Cognition which claims the test is not only accurate in highlighting early forms of dementia, they says it can also differentiate between memory loss caused by other illnesses such as anxiety and depression.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tests are random so they cannot be learned. \u003cbr/\u003eHayes believes she's been reassured by the test although she accepts that it doesn't rule out dementia in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eHer own GP has already sent her for tests including a brain scan and she's waiting for those results.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she says \"more and more, since taking this test I think my anxiety and memory loss is depression.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe iPad test is being used by two GPs at this large practice of five doctors.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of them is Dr. John Load who's administered the test on Hayes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British government says more than half a million people live with dementia and that's set to triple over the next three decades.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current cost of dementia to the health service ÄÅ¼Ë3.8 billion ($6 billion USD) per year.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2009 it announced guidelines which for a nine point initiative to improve dementia care, including early diagnosis although it stopped short of setting compulsory targets.\u003cbr/\u003eGP John Load says \"there is a general strategy which the government has announced to try to diagnose dementia earlier, the idea being that if it is picked up early, support can be put in place if appropriate to keep people living at home in their own environment, or possibly avoid admissions to hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe practice is in an area with a large elderly population and Load believes the CANTAB is useful, but the health authority he works for has not decided to enforce the uniform use of the iPad test.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Jennifer Bute was a GP herself when she noticed her memory had seriously deteriorated.\u003cbr/\u003eShe now lives in a retirement village catering specifically to the needs of people with dementia.\u003cbr/\u003eBute saw three neurologists before she was finally diagnosed and felt particularly humiliated and angry when one neurologist thought she was making it up to gain attention from her family. \u003cbr/\u003eHer family though knew there was something wrong when there highly articulate and high achieving mother began to forget things.\u003cbr/\u003eIt started off with an iron left on, or a meal with half the food missing, scrabble became impossible.\u003cbr/\u003eBute says she felt relieved, rather than frightened by the diagnosis of Alzheimer's when it finally came.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was forced to retire early.\u003cbr/\u003eBute remembers \"I just got lost trying to find patients visiting them in their homes, or trying to find the branch surgery, or even finding my way home.
