Close shot grandfather clock
The Shaker religion has its roots in the Quaker movement in mid seventeenth century England.
But the culture is still flourishing in modern day America.
At the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, visitors can walk through a living memorial to one of the most interesting and unique cultures in the history of the United States.
The Shaker religion originated in England in 1747 as the "United Society of Believers", and made its way to the northeastern United States in the late 18th century.
The Shaker religion is an offshoot of Quakerism, and is so named because practitioners shook and whirled while praying.
Constantly in search of perfection on Earth and associating work with worship, Shakers are known today for their innovations in furniture design, with other important contributions in business, agriculture, music, medicine, and government.
Fleeing persecution in England, in 1774 religious leader Ann Lee brought a small group of Shakers to America, where they were able to live freely by religious principles that included celibacy, communal life, gender equality and pacifism.
Their population peaked in the mid-19th century with 4,000-5,000 members.
Today only a handful of Shakers remain, but the culture has left an important legacy in its encouragement of simplicity and its smooth, elegant designs.
Shakers were the first in the United States to produce commercial seed, and are also credited with the invention of the circular saw, flat brooms, and a version of the washing machine.
The Hancock Shaker Village was purchased by a group of enthusiasts in 1960 from the Shaker Central Ministry and is now run by a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the culture.
From Oval box makers to cooking demonstrations, and farm life activities, visitors can be part of the Shaker world for a day.
The on-site museum's exhibit this year: "Gather Up Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection," showcased a private collection of Shaker artifacts (exhibit ran May 24 through October 31).
Ellen Spear, president and CEO of the Hancock Shaker Village, says the Shakers' design style has a spiritual element that resonates with visitors from many different cultures.
Craftsmanship is a vital part of Shaker culture.
For Steve Griselli, the village's master box maker, the simple perfection of the oval box captivated him and made him want to understand the process in all its precision.
Griselli works passionately boiling wood, bending it to an oval mold, nailing the panels in place and polishing them to a matte shine.
Agathe and Olivier Naton, from France but living in New York, brought their two young children to visit the village to discover a bit more about American culture.
They found the Shakers' simplicity to be a refreshing counterpoint to the consumerism typical of today's U.S. culture. But Shaker design has also become something to acquire.
At Shaker Workshops in Arlington the retail manager, Louise MacGuire, has seen customers from all over the world looking for the polished simplicity of Shaker design.
She highlights its versatility and compatibility with design styles like those of Japan and northern
