celebrate both life and death.\u003cbr/\u003eMusicians dressed in colourful costumes, wearing scary skull like masks.... \u003cbr/\u003e...it can only be preparations for one of Mexico's most famous festivals the 'Day of the Dead', on November 2. \u003cbr/\u003eThe feast draws its roots from the indigenous cultures native to the region, who venerated the goddess of death, Mictecacihuatl. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also marks the Catholic feast day 'All Souls Day'.  \u003cbr/\u003eToday many Mexicans build small shrines to remember their dead relatives and visit their graves to bring gifts of food to the deceased.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the capital an art exhibition inspired by the 'Day of the Dead' is being held at the Frank Mayer Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe show opened on the 25 October and displays large elaborate caricatures. \u003cbr/\u003eArt critic Raul de la Rosa says the 'Day of the Dead' festival stimulates all the senses and celebrates life.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the foot of one of the paintings is a traditional altar adorned with colourful flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a market in Mexico City, preparations for the festival are also well underway, with colourful and macabre items for sale, from skulls to pumpkins.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe city's cultural centre 'Faro de Oriente' is making large cardboard statues, which will be showcased in the city's main square, also known as Zocalo.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year the artists are also making two ten metre statues of Frida Kahlo and her partner Diego Rivera. \u003cbr/\u003eRivera, one of Mexico's most famous muralists, was born in 1886 and died in 1957.   \u003cbr/\u003eHe was married to painter Frida Kahlo, known for her tortured self-portraits and tumultuous relationship with Rivera. \u003cbr/\u003eHugo Pelaez, one of the Faro de Oriente co-ordinators, says the statues as a tribute to the two famous Mexican artists.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother macabre exhibit on show is called \"Tzompantli\", and is a wall of skulls. \u003cbr/\u003eArtist Ricardo Salazar says ancient Mexicans used to construct similar structures with the heads of their enemies, to pay tribute to their gods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe impressive structure is composed of 3,600 plaster skulls, each painted by hand.\u003cbr/\u003eFood offerings are also an important aspect of the Day of the Dead.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the National Industry Bread Chamber bakers are hard at work making traditional 'Pan de Muerto', or bread of the dead. \u003cbr/\u003eMaster baker, Victor Gomar says they hold regular bread making championships to keep alive their traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe making of this sweet bread is just one way that Mexicans remember their dead, celebrate life and retain their unique culture in this most Mexican of
