It is important to note that he was acquitted of the most important charge of the Government, the conspiracy charge, both specifications of it. He'll never face that charge again, if found not guilty. He was found guilty of five specifications of material support; not all of those material support charges, he was acquitted of three of them. That issue is now at the forefront of what will be the appeal of this case and it is important that the government's position is material support is a war crime, the defence's position is that it is not a war crime. Wide of Ratner at desk\u003cbr/\u003eA jury of six military officers convicted Osama bin Laden's former driver of \"supporting terrorism\" on Wednesday in the first war crimes trial at Guantanamo Bay, but cleared him of conspiracy charges.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pentagon-selected jury deliberated for about eight hours over three days before returning the verdict against Salim Hamdan, who held his head in his hands and wept at the defence table after a Navy captain on the jury read the decision.\u003cbr/\u003eThe judge said he would hold a sentencing hearing later Wednesday in the hilltop courtroom on this US base in southeastern Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eHamdan, who is from Yemen, faces a life sentence. both counts of conspiracy.\u003cbr/\u003eJurors accepted the prosecution argument that Hamdan \"aided terrorism\" by serving as bin Laden's armed bodyguard and driver in Afghanistan while knowing that his boss was plotting attacks against the US.\u003cbr/\u003eThe war crimes trial - the first held by the US since World War II - differed from the courts-martial used to prosecute American troops for alleged abuses in Iraq or Vietnam. \u003cbr/\u003eHamdan did not have all the rights of a US soldier, from a jury of his peers to Miranda rights, and the proceedings included secret testimony and allowed hearsay evidence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deputy chief defence counsel for the Guantanamo tribunals, Michael Berrigan, said the split verdict was due to the skill of Hamdan's lawyers under difficult Fratto said in a statement that the Bush administration was pleased by the outcome and considered it a fair trial.\u003cbr/\u003eHamdan was captured at a roadblock in southern Afghanistan in November 2001 and taken to Guantanamo in May 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eHis trial, delayed by years of legal challenges that reached the Supreme Court, was the first demonstration of the Bush administration's system for prosecuting terror suspects.\u003cbr/\u003eThe military accused him of transporting missiles for al-Qaida and helping bin Laden escape US retribution following the September 11 attacks by serving as his driver in Afghanistan. \u003cbr/\u003eDefence attorneys said he was merely a low-level bin Laden employee, a minor member of a motor pool with a fourth-grade education who earned about 200 US dollars a month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe verdict was criticised by an activist from the ACLU - the American Civil Liberties Union.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Never in the history of the law of war has a military
