Evacuated couple leaving airport\u003cbr/\u003eThe first evacuees from the riot torn South Pacific nation of Tonga touched down in Sydney on Monday after New Zealand and Australia sent in troops to restore law and order. \u003cbr/\u003ePro-democracy advocates in the near feudal kingdom said troops from Australia and New Zealand were helping to ensure airport security and  restore the island nation's current political order.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 150 troops and police flew in late on Saturday to secure key infrastructure at the request of the Tongan government,  two days after eight people died in a violent riot that saw 80 percent of the nation's commercial centre torched by mobs.\u003cbr/\u003eArriving at Sydney airport, one Canadian evacuee said she was relieved to leave Tonga and labelled it a \"mess.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"They have to rebuild, there is no electricity, there is no power. You could not go out really and travel around, you certainly couldn't go out into any of the tourist areas or do anything like that so we are just happy to be out,\" she added. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother evacuee said the rioting was very out of character for Tonga and no one could have expected the violence that occurred.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trigger for the violence that started last Wednesday was anger that parliament might finish its session for the year without settling plans to introduce reforms that would give democratically elected lawmakers a majority in parliament over royally appointed legislators.\u003cbr/\u003eFinau Tutone, a pro-democracy leader in Tonga, told New Zealand media that the troops had been welcomed by the people who thought they would perpetuate the existing political system that caused the dissatisfaction.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the Peoples' Committee for Democratic Reform had sent a petition to the King  (Siaosi Tupou V) for the Tongan Prime Minister Fred Sevele and some other ministers to be dismissed because it would quell down the dissatisfaction of the people.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever questions have been raised by pro-democracy leaders that  Australia and New Zealand should have done more to assist political change earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark immediately rejected the claim the troops were helping prop up the current Tongan government.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said New Zealand was not  taking sides in any internal dispute in Tonga and troops were there to restore law and order and that meant the island's international airport could reopen.\u003cbr/\u003eFlights to and from Sydney, Auckland and Samoa proceeded without a hitch. The first plane, a Pacific Blue flight from Auckland, landed around 0945 local time (2145 GMT) on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscussions were due to begin on Monday with Tongan Defence Services chiefs on providing additional military support for reconstruction, said a Tonga army official.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Zealand's High Commissioner in Tonga said the Chinese government was planning a charter flight to evacuate scores of Chinese whose shops and businesses were targeted by looters and arsonists.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga said the embassy was sheltering more than 150 people whose businesses or stores were destroyed by the mobs.\u003cbr/\u003eTonga is situated halfway between Australia and Tahiti, and has a population of about 108-thousand people.
