- 423 dead, a rise of 279.\u003cbr/\u003eBut amidst the grim numbers, there were renewed signs of life in New Orleans, as the airport and port reopened for business.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport reopened to commercial flights for the first time since Hurricane Katrina struck more than two weeks ago.\u003cbr/\u003eNorthwest Airlines Flight 947 from Memphis, Tennessee, the first commercial flight into or out of the New Orleans airport since the storm hit, landed around midday local time with about 30 people aboard, far fewer than the jet could hold.\u003cbr/\u003eThose aboard included emergency workers from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on board were a few New Orleans residents, anxious to see what, if anything, was left of their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eSome carried only a few belongings in plastic bags and gym bags.\u003cbr/\u003eThe slow signs of progress came amid promises from the White House and FEMA to learn from their mistakes and intensify their efforts to help the victims.\u003cbr/\u003eThe recovery was visible in other areas of the city as well. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly two-thirds of southeastern Louisiana's water treatment plants were up and running and 41 of New Orleans' 174 permanent pumps were operational. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials expect the still half-flooded city to be completely drained by 8 October.\u003cbr/\u003eBusiness owners were let back into New Orleans on Monday to assess the damage and retrieve vital records and equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eEmployees of some businesses began the process of draining water and renovating damaged properties.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hotel Royal in the city's French Quarter planned to re-open on Tuesday night.\u003cbr/\u003eOwner Sidney Torres said the hotel was already booked with government teams and clean-up crews.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, as the clean-up process continued, so did the search for bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eRecovery workers turned more and more of their attention to gathering up and counting the corpses in a city all but emptied of the living.\u003cbr/\u003eHow high the death toll might go is unclear.\u003cbr/\u003eMayor Ray Nagin said earlier this month that New Orleans could have 10,000 dead. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a street-by-street sweep of the city last week yielded far fewer bodies than feared and authorities said the toll would likely be well below the dire
