That means that the Americans, which have said that they will live up to the issues of their fiscal deficit and a result of that clearly also their current account deficit, do take the measures that they have promised to deal with that. But it is also true that the Europeans, where we've had half the average growth of American over the last 10 years, must take our own steps to ensure that there is growth through structural reform and other measures in the European economy and that will require the flexibility of the European economy that has been talked about over recent years. Walks down street\u003cbr/\u003eBritain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown visited the United Nations on Friday and called on the United States to back British initiatives to combat global poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in New York at the start of a five day trip to America, Brown compared the schemes to the US-funded Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after the Second World War.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UK will champion medical and financial aid packages for the poorest countries during its presidency of the G8 group of leading industrialised nations in 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said it was the responsibility of all the world's major economic blocs to ensure growth continued and he called on not only the US and Europe, but Asia as well, to ensure financial sector reforms continued to take place . \u003cbr/\u003eThese reforms would also be one of the UK's priorities when it chairs G8 . \u003cbr/\u003eHe also urged the United States to tackle its current account and budget deficits, and warned that the weak dollar was hurting the British and other global economies.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. President George W. Bush has promised to make deficit  reduction a key priority for his second term, a pledge he reiterated on  Wednesday after meeting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.\u003cbr/\u003eBrown was set to travel to Washington after New York, where he is scheduled to meet with Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and members of the Bush administration.\u003cbr/\u003eBrown also criticised recently announced OPEC oil production cuts. Last week OPEC agreed to curb production by a million barrels per day (bpd) beginning January 1, bringing output down to the official 27 million bpd quota.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer U.S. Treasury Secretary
