Zanelatto pointing to water inside bromeliad
35. Wide of bromeliads
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Gardens were created by the Regent Prince of Portugal Dom Joao in 1808.
They were originally used to reproduce plant species brought from other continents and still preserves a European flavour.
More recently, however, the Garden was turned into a major research institution, dedicated to the study of the most threatened of Brazilian ecosystems: the Atlantic Rainforest.
Considered to be one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, the Atlantic Forest has been steadily eroded since colonial times, first for sugarcane production and later for coffee.
Most of Brazil's urban areas are situated in the realm of this forest. Rio de Janeiro is no exception and large forest areas are located within the city.
A large stretch of rainforest borders the Botanical Garden.
Charles Kocergimskis, the Garden's Operations Director, says botanists working at the gardens are trying to identify the main species present in the forest and catalogue them for the public.
The botanical collections in the Rio gardens were started by nineteenth century botanists and they are still growing.
Researchers work in the herbarium and in the laboratories attached to the gardens.
The collection is gradually being scanned and entered into a huge computer database, which will in the future be accessible to the public online.
More than 300 thousand specimens will be available once the work is completed.
Paulo Jose Guimaraes is the director of research at the Gardens.
He says the rainforest has a vast number of plants.
The latest addition to the research facilities here is a Scanning Electron Microscope, an instrument capable of amplifying images one million times.
A group of graduate students at the Botanical Gardens are learning to operate the instrument to study plants from the Atlantic Rainforest.
Professor Claudia Barros is hoping the garden will buy the microscope.
Barros says the microscope allows botanists to see more of the plants, thus identifying them more easily.
Using the microscope requires specific training.
Small plant samples are placed on a metallic disc for analysis.
These plant samples are then coated in gold so they will conduct electricity. They are then placed in a vacuum chamber inside the microscope.
The samples are then ready to be analysed.
Four years ago the Botanical Garden became part of the Ministry of the Environment, under the direction of Marina Silva, a respected activist who now heads the Brazilian Government's conservation efforts.
Silva, who born in the Amazon Rainforest, is concerned with the preservation of the other great Brazilian forest where many of the bromeliads in this garden come from.
Silva says the botanic Garden is much more than a garden.
The bromeliads attract particular attention because of their beauty but also because of the environmental part they play in forest and garden eco-systems.
The biologist in charge of the bromeliads, Eron Zanelatto, says they provide habitats for frogs.
Many animal and plant species are in danger of extinction in Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest and Rio's Botanical Garden has changed its focus from raising decorative or commercial plant species to preserving what is left of the country's greatest focus of biodiversity, the Atlantic Rainforest.
Atlantic Rainforest data from Conservation International:
Keyword-locations

<div class='action-container
