Various of reef near Miyako Jima.
The Nansei Archipelago is a chain of sub-tropical islands off the coast of Japan and home to some of the world's most diverse marine environments.
In 1996 the region was selected as one of the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) global 200 eco-regions or biologically outstanding terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats.
In an effort to promote conservation of the archipelago's marine environments, the WWF is currently surveying biodiversity priority areas in the region.
Small brightly coloured fish swim amongst coral.
But this eco-system in the Nansei Archipelago is under threat... from a star fish.
The Crown of Thorns starfish, gets its name from its spiky protective armour.
It has a big appetite and devours (eats) coral.
The Crown of Thorns starfish has been very successful in this area over the last six years and has devastated many reefs according to environmentalists.
The WWF Japan is carrying out a survey to measure important 'eco-regions'.
Collaborating on the project is an alliance of Japanese reef monitoring organisations, independent specialist researchers and local communities.
Yasumura Shigeki of WWF Japan is one of the project leaders.
He explains that the survey is taking place in over 23 locations between Yakushima (approximately 60km / 37 miles from the most southerly point of the Japanese main land) to the island of Iriomote (around 200 km / 124 miles from Taiwan in the East China Sea.)
However Yasumura says that Crown of Thorns Star Fish is just one threat to the Nansei archipelago marine habitats.... others include soil erosion, water pollution and climate change.
The survey began in 2006 and is due to be completed in 2009, when the data gathered has been analysed and a map outlining the priority areas will be produced.
However it is not an easy task .... waves, currents, the complexity of reef structures and the under water environment itself make surveys extremely physically challenging.
The dynamic nature of the reefs characterised by shifts in coral population and coverage also makes it difficult to distinguish natural from man-made changes.
Kajiwara Kenji is a marine biologist and part of a team conducting the WWF survey.
He explains that the ocean floor is photographed in sections of metre square, each from the same height.
He says "in each region of the survey a total of twenty one locations are selected in which two kinds of survey are conducted. The first method is conducted in (six) fixed areas marked by positioning a metal stake driven into the seabed. The marker means that each year we can accurately survey exactly the same area."
Neither the science behind the project nor the chosen methodology with which the survey is being conducted is particularly new.
What is new however, is the application of this particular methodology to this region and it is hoped that the project will provide a useful data base for future research.
Yasumara Shegiki hopes that in five to ten years, the same areas can be surveyed again.
This will allow researchers to compare the results, analysis of which will help give a better understanding of the complex effects of global warming.
It will also enable the marine biologists to determine if the coral population has recovered from the recent devastation caused by the Crown of Thorns Star Fish.
It is hoped that the WWF survey will provide even more data that will help in the fight to preserve the coral
