Low shot of exterior of police station\u003cbr/\u003eThe alleged mastermind of an organ transplant operation in India that illegally removed hundreds of kidneys - sometimes from unwilling donors - has been arrested at a jungle resort in southern Nepal, an official said on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe international manhunt for the fugitive doctor, Amit Kumar, ended on Thursday night when Nepalese police arrested him in Chitwan, 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of Katmandu, a local police chief said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was found with 230-thousand US dollars in cash and a cheque for 24-thousand US dollars, according to police.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There was lot of currency recovered from Dr. Amit. When he entered Nepal he had not declared that with any authorities,\" police spokesman Upendra Aryal said in a news conference.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal news reports said Kumar was identified by a hotel employee who recognised him from Indian television broadcasts seen in Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian police allege that Kumar was the mastermind of an illegal organ trading operation based in Gurgaon, an upscale New Delhi suburb.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities believe up to 500 kidneys were sold to clients who travelled to India from around the world over the past nine years. \u003cbr/\u003eSome unwilling donors - often barely literate day labourers - were held at gunpoint before their organs were harvested, according to police.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice raided the operation's main clinic in Gurgaon in January and broke up the ring, which spanned five Indian states and involved at least four doctors, several hospitals, two dozen nurses and paramedics and a car outfitted as a laboratory. \u003cbr/\u003eSubsequent raids uncovered a kidney transplant waiting list with 48 names.\u003cbr/\u003eThe raid also found five foreigners _ three Greeks and two Americans of Indian descent _ who authorities believe were waiting for transplants.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are also going to investigate if he has operated or transplanted kidneys in Nepal or if there are any victims in Nepal. foreigners in need of everything from tummy tucks to heart surgery, the Gurgaon kidney transplant racket shocked the country, sparking debates about medical ethics and organ transplant laws.\u003cbr/\u003eKumar has been accused in past organ transplant schemes elsewhere in India. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said last month they believed he had fled the country, and Interpol was contacted for help.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Times of India newspaper quoted Sriprakash Jaiswal, India's junior federal home minister, as saying he hoped Kumar would be extradited soon. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Kumar, who was transferred to Katmandu on Friday, will first be charged and tried in Nepal for violating the Foreign Currency Act by not declaring the cash he was carrying.\u003cbr/\u003eIf he is convicted he could be jailed for up to four years, a top Nepalese police officer said.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice were also investigating whether he was involved in illegal kidney transplants in Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eA preliminary investigation suggested Kumar was a frequent visitor to the country and had been looking for land where he could build a hospital for kidney transplants, officials
