There are few medical facilities available in this poor area, so the community took  matters into their...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat \u003cbr/\u003eDrug abuse, gun battles and stabbings are rife in the mixed-race township of Eldorado  Park in southwest Johannesburg. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are few medical facilities available in this poor area, so the community took  matters into their own hands and set up a civil protection trauma unit to deal with  medical emergencies. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the most unusual feature of this centre is that many of the paramedics are  teenagers who volunteer for training and work in the trauma unit. \u003cbr/\u003eThe residents of Eldorado Park in South Africa live among drink, drug and domestic- related violence and squalor.\u003cbr/\u003ePoverty levels are high and medical help is scarce, with the nearest hospital several  miles away.\u003cbr/\u003eWith so much demand for medical attention and so little resources available, the local  community, in southwest Johannesburg, had to come up with a way to combat the  problem.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents set up a civil protection trauma unit in 1983 to provide emergency medical  treatment which is often needed for people in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eStab and gunshot wounds are common, as is treating those who have overdosed on  drugs, or are victims of domestic violence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe centre is staffed by volunteers who donate their time to give the trauma centre a  hand.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Year' s Eve at the centre is as busy as many other nights in Eldorado Park. \u003cbr/\u003eA teenager, his leg bleeding following a gun fight, is carried into the civil protection  trauma room. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the young victims arriving at the centre are as young as those trained to treat  them. \u003cbr/\u003eThe medical response trauma unit has more than forty volunteers - their average age is  18 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe volunteers treat people brought into the centre or they go to their homes to give  medical assistance.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the volunteers is Kenneth Gray. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile his friends are out on the street, he is bandaging stab wounds and working a  extra 12-hour shift doing emergency first aid.\u003cbr/\u003eKenneth's work with the trauma team started four years ago when he was ten and his  parents divorced. \u003cbr/\u003eHe took to the streets with older friends already involved in the township life of trouble,  after his secure world fell apart.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years later, he watched helplessly as a gangster friend shot himself to death. \u003cbr/\u003eFeeling frustrated because he didn't know how to help, Kenneth went the trauma centre,  where he learnt first aid.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin a few months, this is where he was spending his time after school, experiencing  hardship and success. \u003cbr/\u003eHe delivered a baby by himself, and also had to deal with losing his first patient.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I did C-P-R on a patient. It was a lady of about 86 years of age. She was quite sickly  and I lost her. You know it was quite bad. I felt bad about it and Riedwaan (Mangera)  told me don't feel bad about it, it's the first time.
