STILL IMAGE  -  IXTOC 1 oil well blowout \u003cbr/\u003eThirty years after the Ixtoc oil spill the lives of people living close to the coastal regions affected are still feeling the effects of the disaster. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 140-million-gallon Ixtoc I spill was until this month, the world's worst peacetime oil disaster. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the BP oil well that's spewed oil for two and a half months from a blown-out well has hit the 140.6 million gallon mark, eclipsing the record-setting Ixtoc I spill. \u003cbr/\u003eBut three decades after the Ixtoc oil spill, the fishing industry in the southern coastal state of Campeche remains devastated, impacting the lives of the local people. \u003cbr/\u003eFisherman Pedro Alvarez says his sons left the state to find work, never to return. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My sons had to migrate. We did not have enough to sustain our families. They went to the state of Tabasco and there they have remained.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ixtoc spill threatened coral, sea turtles, shrimp and commercially valuable fish. \u003cbr/\u003eSome species have rebounded while others have drastically declined.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shrimp industry collapsed. \u003cbr/\u003eNicolas Gonzales, the son of a shrimp fisherman, explains: \u003cbr/\u003e\" My father worked on a shrimp boat. If they are lucky, they will get, 4 to 5 hundreds of kilos in 20 to 25 days. \"\u003cbr/\u003eDespite efforts to promote the region as a tourist destination, visitors do not come and restaurants and beaches remain empty. \u003cbr/\u003eMauricio Verdejo, the President of the Association of Restaurants of the Ciudad del Carmen, says that tourism can not compete with the oil industry. \u003cbr/\u003e\" There hasn't been any support, instead there has been obstacles. Due to the developing petroleum industry, tourism has been affected.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe majority of tourism that do arrive are the petroleum platform workers, who go to Ciudad del Carmen to spend their free days in this Mexican version of Texas. \u003cbr/\u003eRicardo Garci is a Petroleum Engineer, who worked for the oil company that owned the Ixtoc1 platform Pemex, in the region in 1979 and witnessed the Ixtoc oil spill.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that oil has brought many benefits to humanity and it would be difficult to imagine the world without oil despite the risk of oil spills. \u003cbr/\u003e\" It is hard to evaluate the effects of an oil spill against the benefits petroleum gives to humanity. Now it's impossible to live without petroleum. \" \u003cbr/\u003eThe parallels between that disaster and the current BP oil spill offer sobering lessons. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever those lessons learnt are not being taught at the local university. \u003cbr/\u003eJonathan Fuentes is studying Petroleum Engineering at the Autonomous University of Carmen. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says the Ixtoc disaster does not feature on the curriculum, nor in discussions in his family home, even though his father worked for Pemex. \u003cbr/\u003e\"  I'm a student of petroleum Engineering, I'm from Cuidad del Carmen, my family is from Cuidad del Carmen, my father worked for many years in PEMEX and I still did not know about the oil spill that occurred at the Ixtoc Platform.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThere were no quick fixes for Ixtoc: it took 10 months to stop the leak, with Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, trying methods similar to those that BP has attempted at its Deepwater Horizon rig.\u003cbr/\u003ePemex managed to slow the spill a little using several methods including forcing metal spheres into the well. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it couldn't stop the leak until two relief wells were drilled _ and even that didn't work right away: the oil kept gushing for another three months after the first well was completed.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the end, Ixtoc spewed a record 140 million gallons of oil.\u003cbr/\u003eMassive slicks reached the northern Mexican Gulf coast and Texas, where it would eventually coat almost 170 miles (275 kilometres) of U.S.
