A dozen national parks are home to virtually all the variety of the African continent's wildlife, and the number of tourists has been growing steadily. Some 400,000 visitors are expected this year, up from 300,000 last year. But the government is not looking for more than half a million by the end of the decade. Instead, efforts are focusing on high quality, low-volume tourism, concentrating on the middle and upper part of the market to minimise the risk of damage to the environment. In-keeping with this policy, new hotel projects have been thoroughly vetted\u003cbr/\u003ebefore being given the go-ahead. This was the case for the 'Serena' lodges owned and operated by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development which opened recently in Northern Tanzania.
