Mid shot Syed Haider Raza's \"Tarangh,\" estimated at 180-200-thousand US dollars\u003cbr/\u003eTwo contemporary Asian art auctions to be held in New York next week are creating considerable buzz.\u003cbr/\u003ePremier auction house, Sotheby's will hold its first ever New York sale focusing on contemporary art from China as well as Taiwan, Japan and South Korea on 31 March, 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eChristie's New York has introduced a separate catalogue for contemporary Indian art for the first time and is offering 166 lots, valued at up to 9.4 (m) million US dollars, on 30 March, 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts at both Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses in New York say that with the economies of India and China growing so dramatically, there are now more wealthy potential collectors from those countries, and they have made their presence felt in the market.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last five years have seen dramatic price increases on contemporary Chinese, Indian and other Asian art.\u003cbr/\u003eJoe-Hynn Yang from Sotheby's auction house said, \"America, Taiwan, Japan, these are countries that have a long collecting, very sophisticated collecting tradition in Asian art.  They know it, they love it, and so you're getting these confluences of great economies really battling it out in the auction rooms.\"\u003cbr/\u003eYamini Mehta from Christie's auction house said, \"I do think that the economic prosperity in India as well as amongst successful Indians living abroad has certainly helped with the art market to create this buzz and this dramatic increase from say 2000 to 2006.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sotheby's auction includes a variety of colourful figurative paintings, photographs and installations that would be at home at any international art fair or gallery. \u003cbr/\u003ePrices start under 10-thousand US dollars with the top range being around 350-thousand US dollars for the most famous names.\u003cbr/\u003eThe growing interest in Chinese contemporary art is not restricted to China. \u003cbr/\u003eThe New York sale, estimated to total as much as eight (m) million US dollars, is aimed at Western tastes.  \u003cbr/\u003ePrices for Asian contemporary art have tripled in the past three years, according to an index created by ArtAsiaPacific, a contemporary Asian art magazine.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth auction houses also have expanded their sales of contemporary and modern Indian art.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the Chinese contemporary art market, which attracts buyers from the US, Europe and China, the Indian painting sales are patronised almost entirely by buyers from India or of Indian descent. \u003cbr/\u003eNewly wealthy Indian buyers have pushed prices to new heights for about ten modern painters who are either elderly or recently deceased.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the most popular Indian painters featured at Christie's are Francis Newton Souza, Tyeb Mehta and Vasudeo S. Gaitonde.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Souza and Mehta have already sold paintings for more than one (m) million US dollars, according to Christie's, joining a rarefied club of contemporary artists.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Chinese antiques continue to bring the highest prices of any Asian art
