We did identify 13 incidents of alleged mishandling of the Koran by Joint Task Force personnel.  Ten of those were by a guard and three by interrogators.  We found that in only five of those 13 incidents, four by guards and one by an interrogator, there was what could be broadly defined as mishandling of a Koran.  None of these five incidents was a result of a failure to follow standard operating procedures in place at the time the incident occurred.  We have determined that in six additional incidents involving guards that the guard either accidentally touched a Koran, touched it within the scope of his duties or did not actually touch  the Koran at all. And we had a very good conversation with him, where he said no that he wasn't beaten or abused but that he had heard rumours that other detainees were.  We then proceeded to ask him about any incidents where he had seen the Koran defiled, desecrated or mishandled.  And he allowed it as he hadn't - but he had heard guards at some other point in time had done this.  He went on to describe to his interrogator that that was a problem that was only in the old camp. End of press conference \u003cbr/\u003eU-S military officials found \"no credible evidence\" to confirm a prisoner's report that a Muslim holy book was flushed in a toilet at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, according to the prison's commander.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Brigadier General Jay W. Hood said investigators did substantiate five cases in which military guards or interrogators mishandled the Koran of Muslim prisoners.\u003cbr/\u003eBrigadier General Hood, who commands the detention centre in Cuba, told a Pentagon news conference on Thursday that a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Koran in the toilet has now told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Koran desecration.\u003cbr/\u003eHood said the unidentified prisoner, questioned again at Guantanamo Bay on May 14, said he had heard talk of guards mishandling religious articles but did not witness any such acts.\u003cbr/\u003eHe refused to discuss details of the subsequent findings of mishandlings but he told reporters that of the 13 alleged incidents, five were substantiated\u003cbr/\u003eIn three of the five cases, the mishandling appears to have been deliberate. In the other two, it apparently was accidental. \u003cbr/\u003ePentagon spokesman Laurence Di Rita said military officials believed it was important to get details of the interim investigation out to the public earlier than normal to correct an impression made by a Newsweek magazine article over an alleged incident where the Muslim holy book was desecrated.\u003cbr/\u003eThe allegations of Koran abuse have stirred worldwide controversy. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Newsweek magazine reported that US officials had confirmed a Koran was flushed in a toilet, deadly demonstrations were held in Afghanistan, although it is not clear what role that story played in sparking the violence.\u003cbr/\u003eNewsweek later retracted its report.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an indication of the Pentagon's eagerness to discredit the allegation, Hood briefed reporters on the interim findings of his investigation even though the Pentagon's standard practice is to withhold comment on the progress of any
