Wide shot sunset, boats
The Steamboat is an iconic symbol, and a traditional sight on the Mississippi River in the United States.
No visit to New Orleans would be complete without a leisurely cruise along the meandering Mississippi on an authentic vessel, reminiscent of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn.
The Steamboat Natchez is a favourite amongst visitors to New Orleans.
The Natchez is the ninth steamer of the same name, with its engine and paddlewheel dating back to 1925.
Don Houghton is the Captain onboard the Steamer. He explains that the Natchez is actually made up of several parts of another steamer, built in the 1920's.
Built in the style of older stern-wheel paddleboats, the Natchez has a 25-ton white oak wheel with the shaft, cranks and wheel arms of solid steel.
Before leaving the dock, the engines are turned on slowly while the boat is still tied, to remove excess condensation from the engine.
Evenings in New Orleans are marked by the sound of the calliope, a 32-note wind instrument powered by the engine's steam that calls visitors to ride the Natchez for an evening cruise.
Musician Richard Scott transfers his piano skills to the smaller keyboard and says he enjoys the thought of his notes reaching all over the city.
On the Natchez, history is in the air.
The first mechanically viable steamboat in the United States was unveiled by John Fitch in 1787, with the first financially workable model by a different designer steaming up the Hudson River in 1807.
A century ago, the original steam engines burned wood or coal, but modern steamboats like the Natchez rely on oil.
The boilers create a pressure of up to 230 pounds per square inch, with the boat using about two-thirds of that at full speed.
From the boiler, the steam is split between two 600 horsepower engines, and the water is subsequently reused.
Like the paddle wheel, the engines of the Natchez were adapted from the steamboat Clairton, built in 1925.
Engine operator James Bynum is enthusiastic about working on such a well-preserved, vintage engine.
Bynum receives commands from the captain on a telegraph machine, and adjusts the steam levels and the paddle's direction accordingly.
It's not a job for the faint of heart, though - temperatures in the engine room are sweltering.
But up on the steamboat's decks, passengers on the Natchez enjoy the cool of the evening.
As the sun sets, they can sip on cocktails as they wave to people on the shore and on passing boats, accompanied by the sound of authentic New Orleans jazz.

<button
