You can go fishing and hunting here, migrating birds come here from Baku (Azerbaijan capital) in autumn incubating among reeds of the lagoon and in spring they fly to Siberia to their summer quarters,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAnzali lagoon is visited by many bird lovers who come here to see 78 species of birds, including different types of pelicans, flamingos and white-front geese.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vast 15,000 hectare lagoon hosts migrating birds from neighbouring countries, as well as from Russia's remote Siberia region.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say some 700,000 birds of different types migrate to the lagoon from Russia Siberia every year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other main attraction are the lagoon's water lilies, which blossom all year long.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal tourist Dehghan says he is fascinated by the variety of the Anzali lagoon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The tulips growing on the water surface were very interesting as well as birds' incubation. Fishing (in the lagoon) was also very interesting because people were fishing in an extremely quiet and serene situation. Altogether it is fantastic and it attracts people to come here,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the lagoon's natural beauty is endangered.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been seriously affected by pollution, stemming from an adjacent industrial region with 150 industrial complexes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lagoon has long been used as a city and factory waste dump which in some parts has made its water brackish. \u003cbr/\u003eLoose regulations have resulted in industrial waste being poured into the wetland, causing serious ecological consequences.    \u003cbr/\u003eInappropriate irrigation systems have also decreased the lagoon's water levels, causing it to silt up.\u003cbr/\u003eDehghan says he hopes this will change.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We expect they (people and government) will care more about sanitation and cleanliness. Waste and droppings which are poured into this lagoon have negatively affected part of its beauty,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the pollution, the Anzali lagoon is still a popular tourist destination.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal tourist Asghari says he came to the region specifically to visit the lagoon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Actually I had never seen the Anzali lagoon and wanted to see it for a long time. I came to Anzali city just to see the Anzali lagoon. It was very interesting for someone like me who was seeing it for the first time,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAnzali lagoon encompasses several dozen villages and many cottages are seen on its margins.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of Iran's rare lagoons, which local resident Reza Yousefpour says is one of the largest in the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Anzali lagoon is one of largest lagoon in the world.
