the U.S. is ultimately successful in bringing democracy to the country. \u003cbr/\u003eWith a violent insurgency raging across much of the country, one wild card in this election process, and one that could determine whether vote is viewed as a success or not, is participation by the once dominant Sunni community.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the Sunnis make up only 20 percent of the electorate, they have historically dominated politics in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are the dominating force behind the insurgency, and many of their leaders have called for a boycott of this Sunday's elections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe interim government, and their American supporters, are gambling that enough Sunnis will ignore the boycott and cast their ballot anyway. \u003cbr/\u003eAs for those Sunnis who are not boycotting the vote, many will stay away from the polling stations due to violence and threats. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the ground, opinions are mixed, with some saying security should come before any vote is held. \u003cbr/\u003eSome say the election is controlled by the American administration and therefore not a democratic process.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalyst Sir Hilary Synnott says that many Sunnis don't like the idea of playing a minority role in a future Iraqi government, after having been at the forefront of politics there for decades. \u003cbr/\u003eSynnott was the Coalition Provisional Authority's Regional Coordinator for Southern Iraq from July 2003 until January 2004. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Adnan Al Pachachi, a prominent and well-regarded Sunni leader, says his party will continue to participate in the elections in spite of calls for a boycott because it is the only way to gain some say in any future government. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, he says he is pessimistic
