and it could mean big changes for the cellular phone market.\u003cbr/\u003eA Delta Two rocket successfully launched five satellites on Monday, the first of 66  planned for the Iridium global communications system to expand mobile telephone  service.\u003cbr/\u003eThe successful launch followed three postponements, the latest on Sunday when an  alarm sounded three seconds before lift-off. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials from Iridium and Motorola crossed their fingers Monday as the rocket carrying  five satellites prepared once again for lift off.\u003cbr/\u003eTechnical problems and human error have forced the launch to be postponed three  times - also postponing the 5-billion dollar project that Iridium hopes will revolutionise  the wireless communications market.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut Monday's launch went off without a hitch and the first five of 66 satellites were on  their way to space. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Iridium communications consortium, led by Motorola, hopes the orbiting satellites  will allow mobile telephone users to call anywhere in the world - as easily as they now  place cellular calls in cities.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, cellular towers on Earth transmit cellular communications.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to Iridium Chairman Robert Kinzie, cellular towers can't be built on nearly  80 per cent of the Earth's surface - so global cellular use is seriously hindered.\u003cbr/\u003eIridium's multi-billion dollar project places satellites around the Earth's orbit and on  ground stations.\u003cbr/\u003eThose satellites will link all of the system's mobile phones and pagers.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"These satellites have inter-satellite link, and can communicate with each other, so  anywhere you go in the world, you can have a pocket phone, and call directly to the  satellite.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Robert Kinzie, Iridium Chairman\u003cbr/\u003eKinzie says the beauty of the system is the ability to call or be called anywhere in the  world.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"With Iridium, if you have my Iridium number, you don't need to know where I am.
