Even a piece of chicken I cannot buy,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eKaduiamatimba recently lost his home to a government operation to clean up shantytowns and spruce up the city of Harare.\u003cbr/\u003eHe will be watching Saturday's election with interest - he can only watch because he is not eligible to vote.\u003cbr/\u003eMost people who lost their homes in the government's shantytown operation will not be voting - a utility bill is needed to register.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is better to get another government which can change things,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBusiness writer Kumdira Mafunda is certain the economy will be a big factor in the election.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A voter coming from queuing to buy maize meal, coming from queuing to buy cooking oil, to salt or sugar, then getting to the ballot box, I really believe that this is going to play an important role in deciding who to vote for,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Zimbabwe's hyper-inflated economy, a loaf of bread can cost anything from seven (m) million to 25 (m) million dollars (62 US cents)\u003cbr/\u003eAngry shoppers at supermarkets are a dark backdrop to Saturday's election in which Robert Mugabe is fighting to prolong his 28-year presidency.\u003cbr/\u003eOn 84-year-old Mugabe's watch, the country has collapsed from food exporter to being dependent on international food handouts and money sent home by many of the five (m) million people - more than a third of the population - who have fled Zimbabwe.\u003cbr/\u003eNow people long cowed into silence by Mugabe's strong-arm methods are speaking openly against their leader, seeing the election as a last hope for the country where inflation is over 100,000 percent a year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Mugabe is accused of stacking the decks against his opponents,  redistricting voting constituencies, buying votes with gifts such as tractors, and delivering state-subsidised food only to his party supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eHuman Rights Watch said last week that Zimbabweans were not free to vote for the candidates of their choice and Amnesty International alleged  \"intimidation, harassment and violence against perceived supporters of opposition candidates,with many in rural regions fearful that there will be retribution after the elections.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the West has imposed limited sanctions, African governments have refrained from acting against Mugabe. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, led by neighbouring South Africa, they have sought to help make the\u003cbr/\u003eelection a success and give Mugabe a measure of respectability.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fact that this fourth contested presidential election is going ahead, with multiple candidates, is a tribute to Zimbabweans' democratic sinew, epitomized by Mugabe's main opponent, Morgan Tsvangirai. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 55-year-old trade unionist has dealt Mugabe past electoral humiliations, and his battered face was flashed around the world after he was severely beaten by police last year.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso running against him is Simba Makoni, 58, a former finance minister and member of Mugabe's politburo until he was expelled for daring to challenge the leader. \u003cbr/\u003eMakoni's last-minute defection is a sign of growing dissent within Mugabe's ruling Zimbabwe African National Union party. \u003cbr/\u003eBut while he could take support from Mugabe, Makoni also could divide the opposition vote.\u003cbr/\u003eAn opinion poll of 1,693 people conducted two weeks ago by the Mass Public Opinion Institute, run by Professor Eldred Masunungure of the University of Zimbabwe, gives Tsvangirai 28 percent of the vote, Mugabe 20 percent and Makoni 9 percent. The poll gave a margin of error of four percentage points.\u003cbr/\u003e Mugabe led a guerrilla movement that fought a seven-year war to end white rule in what was then Rhodesia and bring independent Zimbabwe into being in 1980. \u003cbr/\u003eThen, Mugabe was hailed for his conciliatory attitude to the white minority, the preservation of democratic and legal structures inherited from the British, and the introduction of education and health care for all.\u003cbr/\u003eBut few have benefited and millions suffer from Mugabe's most ambitious project to reverse the colonial legacy - the often violent seizures of white-owned commercial farms that destroyed the country's agricultural base. \u003cbr/\u003eMost whites have since been driven off their farms along with farm labourers and their families numbering more than one (m) million people.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 5,000 white farmers owned 80 percent of Zimbabwe's best agricultural land at independence - an injustice that Britain promised to remedy by buying land on a willing seller-willing buyer basis. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Britain halted its programme, charging most land was going not to landless peasants but to Mugabe's relatives and
