At about 18 hours out, the gravity well will take us in at about 12,600 miles an hour. Fourteen minutes before touchdown, as you saw on the video there, we separate from our crew stage. At that point we, we lose communication of X-band and we start using our batteries. We enter the Mars atmosphere seven minutes before touchdown. At this point you see the parachute will be deployed. We are measuring the atmospheric density in our peak pulse and we open our parachute at Mach 1.5 and we are now going to slow the vehicle down from 1100 miles an hour down to about 120 miles per hour.  Fifteen seconds after parachute should deploy you see the heat shield fall away. successful powered landing in more than 30 years since the twin Viking landers in 1976. \u003cbr/\u003eThe last time NASA tried was in 1999 when the Mars Polar Lander prematurely cut off its engines and crashed into the south pole during a communications blackout.\u003cbr/\u003ePhoenix, on the other hand, will be closely watched by a flotilla of Mars orbiters hovering overhead to relay information to Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Martian weather looks ideal for landing, according to the mission meteorologist. \u003cbr/\u003eA dust cloud reportedly swept through the target site several days ago, but it did not linger and should not affect the spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003ePhoenix is the first to attempt to land in Mars' high northern latitudes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe lander will rely on its heat shield, parachute and a dozen thrusters to slow itself down from 12-thousand miles per hour (19,312 kph) to five mph (eight kph) in just a few minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eIf successful, Phoenix will join two other spacecraft on the Martian surface, the rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which landed in 2004 and have been exploring opposite sides of the equatorial plains.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the twin rovers, Phoenix is designed to stay in one spot and extend its long robotic arm to dig trenches in the permafrost. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has an onboard laboratory to heat the soil and analyse the vapours
