Various of soldiers entering house under investigation\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mexican army has reinforced its presence in the restive town of Apatzingan in Michoacan state, after fighting intensified last week between soldiers and drug cartels.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week four purported drug smugglers and five soldiers were killed in a shootout in the mountainous region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack marked one of the army's highest casualty losses in one incident in more than a decade.\u003cbr/\u003eIt signalled the start of near daily attacks against military officials charged with reclaiming large swaths of Mexican territory controlled by drug gangs.\u003cbr/\u003eLazaro Cardenas Batel, Michoacan state's governor, justified the intervention of the military.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To face a group of armed people, armed with grenades, with weapons which are superior to those of any police officer - state or federal, even municipal - there is no other option but the participation of the army,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Felipe Calderon upped the fight against drug cartels four months ago, when he began deploying some 24,000 federal police and soldiers across Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eDrug violence had reached a crisis, with 2,000 slain and beheaded across the nation last year in bloody turf battles between rival gangs.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, more than 900 people have died so far in street shoot-outs, decapitations or execution-style killings, according to the Mexican daily newspaper Milenio. Authorities have declined to give an official count.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Calderon administration insists it is slowly undermining the cartels, the world's most powerful drug mafias, by detaining more than 1,000 of their alleged soldiers and burning (b) billions of dollars worth of marijuana plants.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violent reaction, the officials say, shows the gangs' desperation.\u003cbr/\u003eMany residents living on the front-line of the conflict say they feel no safer with the Mexican government's crackdown, and claim they are mistreated by the soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eA recent Ipsos-BIMSA poll found that 73 percent of Mexicans believe drug violence has increased, and 40 percent agreed that a wave of drug-gang killings was a response to the
