Wide of Sariwon Folk Park\u003cbr/\u003eThe Year of the Rabbit has been welcomed by crowds from China to Cuba, as celebrations marked the first day of China's Lunar New Year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rabbit is the fourth sign of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac that is used across Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eSome fortune tellers have predicted that the 2011 Rabbit year could spell economic uncertainty in the stock markets, and natural disasters in China. \u003cbr/\u003eResidents and visitors to Beijing on Thursday (03 FEB 2011) marked the new year by praying for good fortune. \u003cbr/\u003eCrowds gathered at the White Cloud Temple, also known as Baiyun Temple, to pray for their hopes and wishes for the coming year. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is customary for people to touch a lucky stone at the Taoist temple, to throw coins at the temple bell and to burn incense. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, at the nearby Temple of Heaven crowds gathered to watch the re-enactment of an ancient ritual.\u003cbr/\u003eHistorically it was customary for China's Emperor to pray for a good harvest during the lunar new year celebrations at the Temple of Heaven.\u003cbr/\u003eCrowds watched as performers in traditional costumes took part in a colorful re-enactment of the Emperor's parade, with participants taking on roles from the Palace such as guardsmen and musicians. \u003cbr/\u003eLast to appear was the Emperor, dressed in brilliant yellow, who went on to pray for the harvest.\u003cbr/\u003eAmongst the dignitaries at the event was Mao Zedong's grandson, Mao Xinyue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe major holiday in Asia shifts somewhat over January and February, this year it starts February 3 and always lasts for 15 days.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Cuba, hundreds gathered in Havana's \"Barrio Chino\" or Chinatown on Wednesday night to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with traditional dancing and music filling the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eCuba's Wushu Society, with over 3-thousand members ranging in age from 4 to 95, captivated the crowds with spectacular dance displays, as people jostled shoulder to shoulder trying to catch a glimpse. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new year rang in with dancing lions and dragons, considered to be the rulers of the heavens, weaving their way through the picturesque restaurants that make up this part of Havana, mostly a neighborhood for fine dining.\u003cbr/\u003eCuba's capital once sported one of Latin America's largest Chinatowns, with a population topping 50-thousand and made up mostly of men from Guangdong province who began arriving in 1847 as indentured servants on sugar plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eThey formed a community outside the city walls then ringing Havana, the site of the modern \"Barrio Chino.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThose numbers peaked in the 1940s and early 50s. But immigration dried up when Fidel Castro took power in 1959 and Cuba became increasingly close to the rival Soviet Union. \u003cbr/\u003eNowadays about one-hundred native Chinese live in Havana, most quite elderly, with thousands of descendants that come together in cultural and community associations to encourage the upkeep of their traditions and ancient culture on the island.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We made an enormous effort,\" said Roberto Vargas Lee, President of the Cuban Wushu Society, and one of the most active members of the Chinese community on the island.\u003cbr/\u003e\"These traditions are very ancient. We do it for conviction and for duty, both as a descendant and as a Cuban,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Soviet Union disbanded, pushing Cuba's economy to the brink, island officials began a drive to preserve Chinese culture for tourism purposes. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1993, the state-run Chinatown Promotion Group allowed Chinese associations and social clubs to operate freely, laying the groundwork for Chinatown's current social and economic liberties.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea celebrated Thursday with traditional Korean games and music, in spite of a long stretch of colder than usual winter weather.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea recognizes the lunar new year as a holiday, and highlights traditional Korean ways of celebrating the day, rather than the Chinese zodiac system of belief which makes 2011 the year of the rabbit.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a folklore theme park about one hour's drive outside the capital Pyongyang, there were none of the rabbit images common throughout east Asia this year.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, at the Sariwon Folk Park, people played traditional games like \"Yut\", where participants throw sticks into the air and try to beat each other on a course around a board.  Children played with kites, spinning tops, sledges, and skipping ropes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sariwon Folk Park was completed in 2006, showcasing North Korea's version of the historical development of the Korean nation and its traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Il visited the Sariwon Folk Park in December 2008, according to the country's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), and emphasized the need for \"properly preserving the tradition of folk customs\", the report said.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea has recently experienced a particularly cold winter.\u003cbr/\u003eKCNA reported in late January this year that it is the first time since 1945 that noontime temperatures in North Korea have remained below zero degrees Celsius for nearly one
