City'.\u003cbr/\u003eCenturies ago the dancing girls of Lahore were much admired for their singing and dancing skills.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now their talents are less in demand and many resort to prostitution in order to survive. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the shadows of Pakistan's historic Badshahi mosque, built by Mughal rulers, lies what is possibly the regions oldest red light district: Heera Mundi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe area was named after an eighteenth century Sikh ruler of the city of Lahore, Heera Singh. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a conservative country, Heera Mundi has won quiet acceptance from a widely perceived prohibitive society.\u003cbr/\u003e'Saima' is one of the more accomplished dancers of Heera Mundi. \u003cbr/\u003eShe reflects on the dark side of the world's oldest profession (prostitution). \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that it was economic hardship which dragged her into erotic dancing and prostitution and that she would not want her daughter to follow in her footsteps.\u003cbr/\u003eThe district has immense historical importance in contributing to the country's culture.\u003cbr/\u003eYusuf Sully is a music producer and long term resident of the area. \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that most of Pakistan's famous film actresses, singers and dancers hail from Heera Mundi. \u003cbr/\u003eSully goes on to say that when successful actresses, singers and dancers left a old tradition was lost, one involving traditional instruments.\u003cbr/\u003eA dancer seducing her punters with well choreographed dance routines has now given way to widely available cheap sex in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ever prevalent risk of sexually transmitted diseases is an issue less talked about in a society where sex is a taboo topic.\u003cbr/\u003eA non-governmental organisation, Sheed, has pioneered peer counsellors who go door to door explaining sex workers in the area the risks they run in practicing their profession. \u003cbr/\u003eThe NGO also distributes free condoms and sponsors a free clinic which specialises in treating sexually transmitted infections.\u003cbr/\u003eFounder of the NGO, Lubna Tabby, casts light on another major issue, that of children. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says, children of prostitutes are discriminated against in the wider society, are denied good education, run the risk of abusing drugs and suffering sexual abuse.\u003cbr/\u003eSheed has also pioneered preparation classes to help children prepare for admission tests to attend better schools in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eThe NGO is trying to provide children here with basic human rights, a teacher says, they are encouraging children to stay off the streets by bringing them into classrooms and give them hope for a better
