We hear these huge numbers of people are coming visiting Stratford and we can only have 1600 people who can visit at any one time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSmith is not sure whether there's any evidence to support the view that the Olympics will drive up betting and gambling generally, but he says: \"When you look at our customers and what their other interests are outside of the casino it's very common that they're interested in sports and sometimes sports betting. So there really is a crossover, how much that will extend to people who actually come to the Olympics we're not really sure, but I do believe there is a crossover there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNot everyone is sanguine about gambling.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and counsellors who deal with addicts say they're concerned about the number of gamblers in the UK, despite the fact that the volume of problem gamblers has tended to remain constant at less than one per cent of the population.\u003cbr/\u003eAddiction psychiatrist Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones is based at the National Problem Gambling Clinic in central London.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says at any one time there are about 450,000 people in the UK whose gambling habit has developed into a serious addiction.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even here they say it's difficult to gauge whether the Olympics will increase the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eBowden Jones says it's not just the addicts who are affected. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's their children, their spouses and she's even come across elderly parents who've lost their homes paying off their children's debt.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinic is the only one of its type in the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eIt cares equally for the families of problem gamblers regardless of whether the addicts themselves seek help.\u003cbr/\u003eBowden-Jones hopes they'll be able to gather evidence to prove whether big sporting events act as a trigger.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"We record two hours of information for each person who refers, or is referred here to the National Problem Gambling Clinic. This means that we also know the reasons and the motivations for people arriving and if we have surges between now and the Olympics we will have an opportunity of finding out whether people were in fact trying to protect themselves.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of online sites offering Olympic related bets is increasing fast.\u003cbr/\u003eThey not only give odds on medals, records and athletes, but every conceivable outcome of the games.\u003cbr/\u003eSome even off odds on what could go wrong. \u003cbr/\u003eBowden-Jones says: \"Unfortunately the general perception of problem gambling as an issue are not really as grounded as they are for example when talking about people who have alcohol problems, or drug addiction.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eBookmakers have been around for generations, but in the UK they weren't allowed to open shop until 1961, now they're even here in London's most affluent and fashionable streets near St. James's Palace.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliam Hill was founded by the company's namesake in the 1930s and is now one of the established chains.\u003cbr/\u003eIt started out as postal and telephone betting service.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company says when it comes to the Olympics it'll offer odds on almost anything you want put money on. \u003cbr/\u003eBut spokesman Graham Sharpe says: \"Bookmakers are looking forward to the Olympics more in anticipation than expectation I would say. It's always an interesting event for us and we always have a decent betting turnover, however, this is the first time in living memory really that we've had the Olympics on our own doorstep.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds: \"There's no telling, given that Britain is the home of bookmaking just how much of an impact the Olympics will have.
