Various of technician working in sperm donor lab\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough no official statistics are compiled, some experts estimate there are at least 30,000 sperm-donor conceptions annually in the United States, perhaps many more. \u003cbr/\u003eToday there is an increasingly outspoken generation of donor offspring, who want the children's interests to be given more weight and for it to become easier to learn about the biological fathers.\u003cbr/\u003eKatrina Clark is in her 20's, lives in Washington, DC and is studying to be an interpreter for the deaf. \u003cbr/\u003eShe was raised by a single mother and never knew her father. \u003cbr/\u003eAll in all, she remembers her childhood fondly.\u003cbr/\u003eClark is also part of an increasingly outspoken generation of donor offspring. \u003cbr/\u003eThey want to transform the dynamics of sperm donation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't know my biological father. Nor anything about him, medical information, etc. So I decided to try contact Fairfax Cryobank to find out as much information as possible about him as I could or medical information that I believe that I was entitled to,\" Clark says\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006, after a few weeks of internet research she discovered the identity of her father. \u003cbr/\u003eShe sent him an e-mail and got a prompt, friendly reply, with a photograph included.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I saw the picture I just burst into tears because it was, it's inexplicable the familiarity , the feeling of seeing your own face in somebody else that you never even knew existed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThey also did a DNA test. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then, however, their communication has been pretty much nonexistent and they have not met face-to-face. Clark, a 21-year-old student at Gallaudet University, admits to being frustrated by the impasse.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sometimes I want to blame myself thinking that I scared him away, wondering what I did wrong. But in reality I think that maybe the relationship was just too intense, too out of this world.\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThese days, most U.S. sperm banks now offer identity-release policies, in which donors agree to let their offspring contact the donor when they turn 18. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many donors still opt for anonymity, producing the kind of frustrations encountered by donor children like Clark. \u003cbr/\u003eClark has now become a dedicated activist working on behalf of donor children, even lobbying for an unsuccessful bill that would have made Virginia the first state to ban anonymous sperm donations.\u003cbr/\u003eLindsay Greenawalt from Ohio is also in  her 20's, was raised by a single mother and is keenly curious about the man whose donated sperm helped give her life. \u003cbr/\u003eA Kent State University graduate who aspires to be a medical librarian, Greenawalt has been searching since 2003 for the biological dad she knows only as \"Xytex donor 2035\" -- the number assigned to him in the 1980s by the Xytex Corp. sperm bank in Augusta, Ga.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think any child, any human being deserves to be denied indefinitely the right to know who they are and where they come from.\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eShe knows the man is now 49, attended college, and, like Greenawalt, has brown hair and greenish eyes. She also knows a few medical details, thanks to an update the man recently sent to Xytex after Greenawalt requested it.\u003cbr/\u003eBut learning of the medical update saddened Greenawalt, because no note came with it. \"He knows I'm looking for him and he doesn't want to make contact,\" Greenawalt thought, conceding that this gave her doubts about what she'd do if she did manage to identify him.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think after I got over, well he sent back the medical history, then it was kind of like, but he didn't respond about the contact and I think it almost felt like a subtle rejection.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Jamie Grifo works at New York University's Fertility Center. \u003cbr/\u003eHe believes that many donor offspring who do track down their biological fathers end out unfulfilled. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says many donor children take this on as a quest to solve all their issues, the stuff we all go through in adolescence. \u003cbr/\u003eGrifo, the past president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies, says children's rights must be balanced against the interests of donors and the parents who will raise the child. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that a heavy emphasis on the rights of a child wouldn't always work in the realm of donor-assisted conception. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the donors enter contracts not expecting or wanting to be contacted. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The couple or individual who has the child enters the contract somewhat in desperation. It's not a right, it's not a right you are born with.\" \u003cbr/\u003eParents who want to ensure their sperm-donor offspring can learn the identity of their biological father can arrange that when they select a donor. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Grifo days that if the contract is for it to be anonymous, it should remain anonymous, and the child just has to deal with that. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says a ban on anonymous donations would deter donors and hurt families desperate for children. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I know there are many couples out there who would not be parents were it not for these anonymous sperm and egg donations. And I think if it was required that the donor be notified at the request of the child then there would be fewer people donating either eggs or sperm and there would be a lot of parents out there who would never be parents because of that.\" \u003cbr/\u003eA recent study by the Commission on Parenthood's Future, titled \"My Daddy's Name is Donor \" surveyed 485 donor offspring and concluded they were more troubled and depression-prone than other young adults in comparison groups, and recommended an end to anonymous sperm donation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut proponents of banning anonymous donations say donation centres are just worried about their pocketbooks. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter all, sperm donation is a huge business in the US.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
