Mid of Rasoulzadeh performing at keyboard\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Persian music is getting a makeover in Tehran.\u003cbr/\u003eAn innovative Iranian musician has electrified the ancient three-stringed Setar to make music where past and present styles come together.\u003cbr/\u003eIt sounds decidedly modern, but the rasping rock chords coming from this instrument represent a revolution in Iranian music.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three-stringed Setar, a kind of lute, is an ancient acoustic instrument, a familiar part of traditional Persian music.\u003cbr/\u003eDating back to 10th century, the Setar is considered by many to be Iran's national instrument.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now it has been brought crashing into the 21st century, with electrifying effect.\u003cbr/\u003eMusician Soroush Gharamanlou decided to amplify the Setar, creating a whole new sound - yet one that still sits within the Persian tradition:\u003cbr/\u003e\"This instrument (electric Setar) has the frets of Persian music but modifications on its scale give us the chance to perform Persian music. I mean Iranians are familiar with this sound.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIran has an overwhelmingly youthful population with the majority of the 74 million population under the age of 35.\u003cbr/\u003eMany fear that exposure to a wide range of different musical cultures through satellite TV and the internet could dilute interest in Persian musical traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eGharamanlou believes that his invention will help bring old and new, young and old together:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our objective was to close the gap between youth music and traditional Persian music. At present majority of Persian music lovers are middle-aged people but our objective is to reconcile the youth with this music.\"\u003cbr/\u003eClassically-trained, Gharamanlou was aware he was taking a risk with conservative traditionalists.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, despite resistance and much criticism from prominent masters of the traditional Setar, he persevered. \u003cbr/\u003eGhahramanlou's first album with the  improvised electric Setar - \"My Conscience is on Fire\" was a bestseller at Iran's international book fair in April 2011. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My conscience is on fire\" was also among the top seven albums of Iran's Music Association. \u003cbr/\u003eThe electric Setar was designed and made over the course of one year. Ghahramanlou tried it out first in Tehran's bustling subway stations to check audience reaction.\u003cbr/\u003eHe worked with master craftsman Ahmad Nazemi at his workshop in Tehran, where he has made musical instruments for more than 25 years.\u003cbr/\u003eWith Nazemi's blessing, the electric Setar came into being.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally the Setar would be played in intimate surroundings to small numbers of people.\u003cbr/\u003eThey wanted to adapt the electric Setar to fit the frets set up for playing Persian music and at the same time have technical power of western instruments to meet the demands of concerts for large audiences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bowl and frets of the Setar had to be modified several times to accommodate the movements of musician for a contemporary style.\u003cbr/\u003eGhahramanlou says the modifications allow for a more dynamic approach:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The flat bowl of this instrument gives me the chance to move while playing it, therefore I naturally compose musical pieces with a dynamic mode. I don't believe in composing a dynamic piece in the first place.
