The total number of votes against the proposal is 809-thousand-728. The difference is therefore 9-thousand-124.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Tim Sexton, national referendum returning officer\u003cbr/\u003eThe recount was called after the first count produced a razor-thin victory for the \"yes\" lobby - some 7-thousand votes. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the end, the official final margin was indeed higher in favour of the \"yes\" vote - but it was still the closest vote in Irish history.\u003cbr/\u003eThe difference in the two counts was later accounted for by one constituency in suburban south Dublin which had inadvertently identified one set of \"yes\" votes as \"nos\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe more liberal population of Ireland's capital, Dublin, reacted with predictable joy to the news from their returning officer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"yes\" supporters make up the majority of this cosmopolitan city's population.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they had to make up for the larger \"no\" vote in the rural rest of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-divorce campaigners were visibly shocked by the strength of the \"yes\" vote even before the recount.\u003cbr/\u003eThey vowed to keep on fighting - some activists even threatened a court challenge, citing a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that found the government had unlawfully spent 750-thousand dollars in taxpayers money on pro-divorce ads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vote is the sharpest break yet with Ireland's strong Roman Catholic traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while the vote is a sign of the church's weakening moral authority in Ireland, its supporters say it is also a sign that the country is willing to make room for non-Catholics.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This result will show the minorities of Northern Ireland that we are ready to bring everybody on board here and ready to get on with the peace process - you know, make the changes that are necessary, help everybody to tolerate one another and give a good strong lasting peace in this country.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Declan Leddan, \"Yes\" campaigner\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a widespread feeling that the rising number of broken marriages and a series of sex scandals involving the church have contributed to the shift to a \"yes\" vote from a distinct \"no\" vote in 1986.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That's your query - quite clearly social changes have taken place in Ireland as witnessed in the fact that in 1986 the vote on this issue went two to one against and in 1995 it would appear to have been carried.
